Dr. Irelia Machado can’t help but reflect on how far her orthodontic practice has come. Seventeen years ago, she opened Smiles for Life Orthodontics in Flower Mound. At the time, it was her, an assistant, a front desk person, and a treatment coordinator. The area was growing fast, and she certainly wasn’t the only orthodontist nearby.

But Dr. Machado’s heart for people, relationships, and turning beautiful smiles into a reality was second to none. And that mindset quickly set the tone for everything that followed. What started as a small office with a big vision gradually became a thriving practice.

Three employees turned into nine. Patients, regardless of age, became part of the practice family.

Before she knew it, loyal patients wouldn’t dream of choosing anyone else for their orthodontic care — trusting her experience, steady hand, and uncompromising warmth and care to guide their smile journey.

“I’ve always believed that beyond straight, well-functioning teeth and a beautiful smile, it’s critical to establish relationships,” Dr. Machado said. “You truly do become family here, and it’s fun to think about how far we’ve come.”

Meet Dr. Machado

Dr. Machado can’t imagine being in any other profession, so much so that even her children, Adriana and Jorge, fed off their mother’s enthusiasm and passion and have already started their own journey in the dental industry. That’s the type of lasting legacy Dr. Machado has dreamt of. And like most meaningful journeys, hers is steeped in education and hands-on practice.

A native of Maracaibo, Venezuela, Dr. Machado earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1998 from La Universidad del Zuila in Venezuela. After practicing dentistry for a

year, she began her specialty training at Saint Louis University and completed a cleft lip and palate fellowship at the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. She went on to earn her Master of Science in orthodontics in 2001 and became an instructor at La Universidad del Zulia. She and her husband, Jorge Sr., moved to Texas in 2005, and she opened her own practice four years later.

“I stay current on changes in technology and treatment options through hours of continuing education,” she said. “Basically, I try to learn all I can to help my patients.”

In her free time, Dr. Machado loves spending time with her family, which includes two grandkids, and investing back into the community.
