When Gary and Jennifer Starr launched Starr Construction in Dallas nearly a decade ago, they weren’t chasing trends or trying to be the loudest name in the room. They were simply building homes — and relationships — with intention, honesty, and a shared passion for doing things the right way.
“I came into this industry about 25 years ago,” says Gary Starr, founder and president of Starr Construction. “I started as a project manager for several high-end builders, straight into the luxury market.” After 15 years learning the ropes and building a reputation in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Gary took the leap and started Starr Construction with Jennifer by his side. “We began with small renovation jobs, anything we could get our hands on,” he recalls. “It grew from there.”
Today, Starr Construction is known for crafting custom homes that are as unique as the families who live in them — especially in Colleyville, Southlake, Westlake, and Highland Park. “We built our first custom home as Starr Construction in 2018,” Gary says. “Now we’re doing major projects all over, from Lake Ray Roberts to Corsicana.”
The Starrs, both DFW natives, are more than business partners. They’re a dynamic team. Jennifer, a licensed real estate agent since 2015, manages the business and design side of the company. “I was a nanny before Gary and I started dating,” she shares. “When we launched the business, I learned everything on the fly.”
Their combined strengths show in every detail. Gary is in the field almost daily, saying “I still go to every job site. I love it. I don’t even consider it work.” Jennifer oversees interior design. “We have an in-house design team,” she explains. “We do our own spec designs, and we also love collaborating with outside designers. But if a client wants guidance without hiring a full-scope designer, we can help with tile selections, finishes — whatever they need.”
True Custom Homes, Every Time
One thing that sets Starr Construction apart is their commitment to originality. “We’ve never built the same home twice,” Gary says. “Every house is a one-of-one.” Jennifer adds, “That’s what makes a Starr home special — your neighbors won’t have anything like it. It’s tailored to your family.”
Whether clients arrive with an architect in tow or need guidance, the Starrs are flexible. “About 50 percent of the time clients bring their own architect,” Gary says. “Otherwise, we match them with one based on their style. If someone wants a traditional home, we’re not going to send them to a modern architect. We want the right fit.”
Building with Integrity
At the heart of Starr Construction is a clear mission: transparency, integrity, and passion. “Everything we built in the first five years was word of mouth,” Gary says. “We didn’t advertise. We made sure our clients were happy, and the referrals followed.”
“Keeping our word is one of our biggest values,” Jennifer adds. “If we say we’re going to do something, we do it.”
The couple speaks with conviction about running a trustworthy operation, especially in an industry where clients often share horror stories. “We just got a call from a potential client whose previous builder had embezzled money,” Gary says. “That happens too often. But we run separate accounts for every client, and we’re an open book. We give referrals gladly. People need to know they can trust us.”
Jennifer sees honesty as a two-way street. “We believe in being brutally honest during the process. It’s our job to give clients every option so they can make the best decision for their family and budget, even if they don’t like what they hear at first.”
That commitment to truth-telling, combined with their deep personal involvement in every project, is a key differentiator. “I’ve worked for builders who never step foot on the job site,” Gary says. “But that’s not us. We’re hands-on. Passion shows up in how we treat each build, whether it’s a custom or a spec home.”
Elevating Colleyville, One Home at a Time
While their business spans the Metroplex, the Starrs are currently focused on expanding their presence in Colleyville — a community close to Gary’s roots. “We’ve got a lot of spec homes going on there right now,” Jennifer says. “And we’re bringing a different style — timeless, classical architecture that feels like it could’ve been built this year or 100 years ago.”
Jennifer points out that although they’re from the area, they’re bringing a fresh, distinctly Dallas aesthetic to the Colleyville market. “There are some really established builders there, but we want to bust through the door,” she says. “We’re introducing new design ideas, something different.”
A Legacy Built on Relationships
Beyond the walls and windows, what truly defines Starr Construction is its people-first philosophy. “Gary’s really relationship-focused,” Jennifer says. “He still talks to some of the clients he worked with 20 years ago, and many of the subcontractors he works with now, he’s known just as long.”
That loyalty runs deep. “We picked the name Starr Construction because we stand by it,” Gary says. “Our name is on every project. Through the good, the bad, and the ugly, we’re proud of it.”
In a region teeming with luxury builders, Starr Construction shines not because of flashy marketing or cookie-cutter designs, but because of a simple, steadfast commitment to doing things the right way.
“I like to win,” Gary admits with a laugh. “Not in a cutthroat way. But I love putting the best product out there. And when I see a family walk into their finished home and they’re in awe —that gets me emotional every time. That’s why we do it.”
