Greater Houston knows how to prepare for a hurricane or storm. We load up on water, food, flashlights, and batteries, but some of us forget one of the most important things besides keeping you and your family safe and secure — maintaining electrical power.

Have you thought about what you’d do if the power went out for weeks? There’s no need to panic when you have a generator installed, started, and maintained by the husband-and-wife team of Reed and Brittney Smith, owners and operators of Houston Equipment Repair in Tomball. Known as the generator and small equipment experts, they’ve been keeping customers electrified since 2017.

Reed and Brittney favorably serve their customers with an efficient quoting, scheduling, and installing process, saving you time and money. “We offer the education and information needed for choosing the best generator for your specific needs,” Brittney said.

Reed’s background lies in heavy industrial fabrication, electrical, and building equipment for the oil field. First, he opened a repair shop for small machines and lawn equipment. His renowned talent for knowing how to fix anything and everything became well-known, leading to generator installation and the opening of their current storefront in Tomball. Reed and his team of technicians do all the mechanical work, including the repair of customers’ failing generators that other companies installed. Brittney manages everything else, building solid customer relationships and ensuring first-class service. Their stellar reviews are testament to Houston Equipment Repair’s elite level of service.

Operating with Honesty and Transparency

“We don’t believe in high-pressure gimmicks, so we don’t hire salespeople,” Reed explained. “You’ll deal directly with Brittney and me.” They won’t waste your time sending a representative to your home, pressuring you with sales tactics and discounts or so-called free upgrades. “We simply ask you to fill out a form on our website and provide a few photos of your electric and gas meters, as well as the area where the generator will be placed,” Brittney explained. “With that information, we give you an honest, straightforward, no-pressure estimate with no hidden fees.” Some customers might prefer a personal review of the generator placement and installation process. Brittney is happy to arrange a home appointment to explain the details.

You can call to discuss any questions you may have after you receive the estimate. The process is simple and straightforward. Your quote includes the installation of both the generator and the concrete slab it’s placed on. The installation of the slab is scheduled and completed first. After one week, the generator is meticulously installed by Reed and his crew in a four-to-five-hour process. You’ll be up and running in no time —even if your home is without power.

Hurricanes and Storms

Remember Hurricane Beryl? No one was prepared for the level of destruction and power outages due to the damage. Two million homes in the Greater Houston area were without power from days to weeks. “We were fully booked for months after that week,” Reed said. “It was pretty chaotic with people calling nonstop all day long to purchase or repair generators.” Reed and his crew were out in the field immediately, mainly repairing failing generators installed by companies other than Houston Equipment Repair.

Customers Share Their Stories

“Our Kohler generator failed during Beryl, just months after maintenance,” Andres said. “After two inspections and six months of miscommunication, the original dealer quoted us over $10K for repairs while constantly pushing us to buy a new generator instead. Thankfully, we got in touch with Reed. He was a lifesaver! From the moment he arrived, it was clear he knew exactly what he was doing. In less than two hours, he identified and fixed the real issue — something completely different from what the original dealer had pointed to —saving us a huge expense.”

Carolyn, another of Houston Equipment Repair’s customers, couldn’t be happier. “These folks know what they’re doing and are really a cohesive unit. They handled all the detail work. The price was more than fair, especially considering the efficiency and hassle-free installation,” she said. “From the estimate process to the installation, our generator purchase was smooth and straightforward. The installation went exactly as promised. The crew arrived at 7 AM and left about 10:30 AM, with the generator up and running. Mike turned it off the following day after it had run 25 hours. The Smart Start Service was performed and now we’re set for 200 hours of running time.”

Stand-by vs. Portable Generator

Stand-by generators monitor the power of your house. A transfer switch automatically kicks in when the power goes out. Most of these types of generators are the Generac brand.

Portable generators will power most of the home’s basic electricity: refrigerator, lights, and TV, but must be set up manually. It can be placed anywhere. Portables can save you money but won’t provide enough power for an extended period of time or to the entire home.
