Dr. Mary Beth Turner says the best part of her job is seeing people smile. As one of the highly trained audiologists at Gomer Hearing, a woman-owned and locally owned practice, she works with people from teens to centenarians to help them achieve a higher quality of life through better hearing.

Dr. Turner especially enjoys hearing from family members about how wonderful it is that their loved one can hear better. “I’ve had people say, ‘I got to enjoy a favorite TV show with my mom, and we didn’t have to catch up during commercial breaks. We could watch the show and then talk about it together.’ It’s rewarding to enable people to improve the quality of their relationships,” she says.

Originally from Mississippi, Dr. Turner has worked with an audiologist since she was just five years old. When she didn’t pass her kindergarten hearing screening, a hearing test identified that she had hearing loss. As she grew up, she began thinking about what kind of career would allow her to use her math and science skills while also allowing her to help people. Audiology was a natural choice. “I set a goal in high school to become an audiologist,” she says.

Dr. Turner achieved her goal, earning her bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and her master’s and Doctor of Audiology degree from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She is certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and holds a certificate in the American Board of Audiology clinical preceptor program. Before moving to Dallas to live closer to family, she worked at a large ENT practice in the Greater Houston area.

Today, Dr. Turner is part of the renowned team at Gomer Hearing and supervises doctoral students in the audiology program at the University of Texas at Dallas. “It’s a unique opportunity to teach the next generation of audiologists,” she says.

Outside of work, Dr. Turner is active with her church and participates in a women’s Bible class each week. She also enjoys going to Broadway shows through Broadway Dallas and spending time with family and friends. As a self-proclaimed foodie, Dr. Turner is always up for checking out new restaurants and particularly enjoys a good brunch.

Whether you are having trouble hearing or need some help with your existing hearing aids, Dr. Turner is ready to help you get the most out of life. “Come get a test and evaluate where you are,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to try something new.”
