LOCAL EDUCATOR IS TEXAS TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Cypress Park High School engineering teacher Kathryn Haynes was named the Texas Teachers of Tomorrow 2020 Teacher of the Year during a short ceremony at Cypress Park.

Any first-year teacher that completed the certification process through Texas Teachers is eligible for the award. More than 6,500 teachers completed the certification process through Texas Teachers last year and six teachers were named Teacher of the Year finalists. Haynes received the most votes out of all the nominees.

Before entering the classroom, Haynes worked as a cosmetologist while earning her degree in biomedical engineering and then took a position in a research lab. Haynes started a tutoring business on the side, where she was told by multiple people that she should become a teacher. “I’m so grateful for this award,” Haynes said. “I want to thank everyone at Cy Park and Texas Teachers. I could have not done this without the support and the validation that I was doing a good job and the support of the district. It really means so much to me.”
