For Steven Trostel, MD, there is no such thing as seasonal busyness in the labor and delivery department at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Frisco. Since opening its doors in 2007, the facility has delivered over 37,000 babies. That’s more than 2,200 newborns a year and nearly 200 a month — making it feel like a delivery or two happens every five minutes.
And the best news of all is that Dr. Trostel, the maternal medical director for Women’s Services, and his staff are always prepared for the welcomed windfall.
From advanced technology and comfortable labor and delivery rooms to understanding the needs of family and friends, they’re focused on ensuring each expectant mother is safe, joyful, and in the moment with the newest addition to their family.
“Childbirth is truly a miracle, and it is our privilege to be a part of it,” Dr. Trostel said. “We have great leadership, a strong administrative team that supports our mission, and a compassionate and dedicated Women’s Center staff, which includes labor and delivery, NICU, postpartum, antepartum, and more. When you have all those elements under one roof, it’s easy to start checking all the boxes.”
He added, “It can get pretty busy here, but we welcome it. Our staff is very experienced, with an average tenure of eight years in an industry that averages four. They can handle pretty much anything that comes into L&D.”
Nationally Recognized Labor and Delivery
Expecting parents in North Texas have plenty of options for quality, patient – and family-centered labor and delivery facilities. As a result, it can be challenging to differentiate yourself. That’s why the Baylor Scott & White – Frisco team is so special. In an industry where everyone’s goal is to provide the highest level of care, Baylor Scott & White – Frisco has gone out of its way to earn a Level II maternal designation and a Level II neonatal designation. Newsweek voted them one of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals in 2023.
The bottom line is that family-centered care is their priority. With a birthing plan unique to each patient, the latest safety protocols to keep moms healthy, a NICU, culturally-sensitive meals, and complimentary pregnancy and childbirth classes, they are ready to help each family meet their new addition. This includes offering eight labor rooms, 23 postpartum rooms, and eight antepartum rooms. Unlike many hospitals, Baylor Scott & White – Frisco has a nursery so moms can rest. And as mommies and babies receive care, their loved ones also do not have to worry about being left in the dark. The goal is to keep everyone informed throughout the process with technology to communicate every step in their loved one’s journey.
Each suite has been designed to look like a home rather than a hospital room and offers wireless fetal monitoring. This means that moms can move around, stretch, and change positions while monitoring their babies. In addition, all newborn babies are monitored with GPS capabilities and an alarm system to prevent babies from being taken outside the unit before they are discharged.
Parents are even treated to a celebratory lobster and steak dinner prepared by the hospital’s in-house executive chef.
“There are several things that help us stand out. For starters, we are in Frisco. This is a booming area to be a part of. We also have a very competent facility with extremely high standards, and the facility’s layout differs from anything you’ve ever seen,” Dr. Trostel said. “Most people could drive by us and not realize it’s a hospital at first. And that was done with purpose. We wanted the hospital to be an aesthetically pleasing environment, and our patients appreciate it.”

The Childbirth Experience
Three hospital nurses who work in the nursery together at Baylor Scott & White – Frisco recently chose to deliver their precious bundles of joy in the same hospital where they work. The trio includes Blakelee Weisheit and baby Maverick, Melissa Miranda and baby Lucas, and Courtney Hatton and baby Hayes. These nurses, who dedicated their lives to caring for others, entrusted the labor and delivery team with their special moments. The entire team was honored to be a part of their journey.
“The expectation today is that you can have your children anywhere and receive appropriate and compassionate care,” Dr. Trostel said. “While that’s true, you must have high standards of care at all times, and we’d like to think we do a great job in those areas here — all while providing an experience unlike anything families have seen before.”
Baylor Scott & White – Frisco is a member of the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM), which helps hospitals continually improve quality by implementing best practices. AIM is a collaboration between the Texas Department of Health and Human Services and the Texas Hospital Association focused on infant and maternal safety.
Clearly, patients and staff agree that it’s working. As measured by the Press Ganey patient questionnaire distributed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, they consistently rank in the 99th percentile for patient experience.
