Like a pediatrician is a specialist in the medical field, board certified pediatric dentist Dr. Elizabeth Chen is a specialist in the dental field. After earning her DDS, she completed years of rigorous postdoctoral training which included extensive training in child psychology and development, pediatric oral pathology, growth and development, anxiety management, and much more.

Seeing a Specialist and Creating a Dental Home Matters

Dr. Chen is an expert at maintaining children’s oral health as they grow. She provides education, tools, and recommendations to help prevent tooth decay in children while providing preventive care such as cleanings and sealants. Her specialized training includes monitoring conditions when appropriate but also identifying and treating issues before they progress and need more extensive treatment.

Like the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Chen recommends establishing a dental home for your child by age one. “One of the biggest hurdles pediatric dentists encounter is seeing a child who needs extensive dental treatment that we have just met for the first time. Building a relationship with children is a very important step in gaining their trust prior to performing any dental treatment,” she says.

Ideally, the dental home is where your child will stay through adolescence. “This consistency enables children to learn the importance of quality dental care and maintaining a healthy relationship with dental providers that will follow them into adulthood,” Dr. Chen explains.

Dr. Chen and her team use proven techniques to create a positive and stress-free dental experience. Kids especially benefit from their “tell, show, do” approach where they explain what will be done during a dental visit and demonstrate it to them using a stuffed animal before performing the treatment.

Dr. Chen completed her DDS at the University of Texas School of Dentistry and a pediatric dentistry residency at the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston, earning a postdoctoral certificate in pediatric dentistry and a Master of Science in dentistry. The mother of two has been voted Best Pediatric Dentist in Katy and Fulshear since 2017, most recently receiving a 2023 Living Magazine Readers’ Choice award. Active in the community, she sponsors events at local elementary schools and supports several local organizations, including Casa de Esperanza de los Niños.
