Guided by the belief that hard work can turn any dream into reality, Velma McMillan has become a leading force behind a celebrated brand. As a multi-unit franchise owner of Blo Blow Dry Bar, she’s created more than a place to get your hair done. She’s created an experience.
Velma’s journey into the beauty space began with a simple frustration. “I used to have to drive across the bridge and an appointment would take all day,” she says. “If I didn’t want to make the drive into Dallas, I knew other women felt the same way.”
Instead of settling, she saw an opportunity. What started as a solution for herself quickly became a way to serve her entire community.
Opening her first Blo Blow Dry Bar in Rockwall wasn’t easy. It took more than a year to secure the right location, followed by months of coordinating contractors and logistics. “I had a dream and pushed through,” Velma says. “I want others to know that if you dream it and you keep pushing, you can achieve it.”
That persistence paid off. Today, she owns multiple Blo locations across Texas and Virginia, with plans to continue expanding.
Step inside one of Velma’s salons, and it’s clear her vision goes beyond great hair. “We give people what we call the ‘pink carpet treatment,’” she says. “It’s inviting and relaxing here. If you want to talk, you can talk. If you just want to relax with your beverage, you can have a quiet appointment.” It’s a philosophy rooted in meeting people exactly where they are and making them feel their best when they leave.
Clients notice the difference. One guest shared that the “cute, fun and luxe Blo Bar made my birthday an off-the-chain special event,” complete with flowers, bubbly, and a glam squad that sent her out ready to celebrate. Creating those kinds of moments is what Velma loves most — turning everyday appointments into something memorable.
At the heart of it all is family. Velma’s children are part of the business, and she sees her work as a living example of what’s possible. “They need to see me build it,” she says, “so they can too.” Her goal is to create a legacy that extends well beyond her own success — one that inspires future generations to dream big and follow through.
Outside the salon, she stays deeply connected to her community, supporting organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, Meals on Wheels, and Women in Need. Whether she’s giving back or building up, her focus remains the same: making a difference.
Through it all, her guiding belief hasn’t changed: “If you dream it, you can achieve it. If you fall down, it’s okay…just keep on working.”
