Q&A
Pool Builder
What’s the best time of year to start planning a new pool?
It’s always a great time of year to start planning a swimming pool, as a swimming pool is an investment that lasts a lifetime and not just one season. The initial consultation and design phase typically takes a month. Permitting and HOA requirements can take 1-2 months. Construction will take approximately three months. So, from the first phone call to the first splash, it can be about four months. However, this can vary due to project detail and complexities.
How do I choose between a chlorine and saltwater pool?
Saltwater swimming pools and traditional chlorine pools both use chlorine to sanitize the water, but they differ in how the chlorine is delivered and maintained. Saltwater pools include water that’s gentler on the skin, eyes, and hair. They also need less maintenance since saltwater systems automatically generate chlorine through a salt generator. Another benefit to saltwater pools is a less noticeable chlorine smell since the chlorine is produced and consumed in a more balanced way. And since salt systems maintain more consistent chlorine levels, you’ll benefit from reduced algae growth, better water quality, and improved overall clarity. Saltwater pools have a higher upfront cost but often cost less to maintain over time.
What does pool maintenance really involve, and how much time does it take?
Pool maintenance may require about 30 minutes per week. It involves testing and balancing water chemistry, emptying skimmer baskets and pump baskets that collect leaves and debris, brushing walls and steps to prevent algae and biofilm buildup, and occasionally vacuuming the floor if excessive environmental debris falls into the pool. We also recommend cleaning the filter cartridges twice a year to ensure proper filtration. Swimming pool companies with trained maintenance personnel can usually complete weekly maintenance in 15 minutes.
Is it possible to add a pool and keep my favorite trees?
Large trees can significantly affect a swimming pool’s construction and long-term performance. Large tree roots, like oaks, willows, and maples can damage the pluming, decking, and pool shell because they can spread far and grow aggressively. Trees shed leaves, flowers, seeds, and sap that can lead to chemical imbalances, plaster stains, and algae growth. It is recommended that large trees be at least 5-10 feet away from the pool edge. Noninvasive root trees like olive trees, hollies, and palms can be used for landscaping near the pool.
