During his years as a urologist, Dr. James Kelley has witnessed—and participated in—some astounding medical advancements. Even as he has, he never wants to forget the basic principles that have made all the difference in his practice: truly listening to his patients, taking time to educate them about their condition, and never forgetting what it felt like to be a patient.

As a young man, James witnessed firsthand the difference a kind and caring doctor can make, when a hip disorder landed him in a wheelchair for two years followed by a complete hip replacement at age 21. “My goal is to provide my patients with a patient-centered approach to their urologic care, treating them as a whole person rather than just a disorder, diagnosis, or problem,” he said. “Patients tell me I’m easy to talk to. They feel like things were explained in ways they can understand. Certainly, that began with me being a patient first and a doctor second.”

Patient Advocate

Dr. Kelley takes seriously his role as patient educator. “No two patients are exactly the same,” he said. “I like to spend as much time as I can with each patient until they feel comfortable with their treatment plan going forward. I want them to know they have a voice in making decisions about their own care. That can only happen if I take the time to first listen to them then guide them toward the best options for them.

Urology has been the perfect specialty for Dr. Kelley. “It’s a rapidly advancing field where I can follow my patients for years,” he said. “And I’m able to treat problems that greatly improve my patients’ quality of life. My goal is to treat every patient like a member of my family. They can rest assured any treatment options I discuss I’d also recommend to my family and friends.”

As his practice has evolved and his patient base has grown, Dr. Kelley finds himself placing an emphasis on minimally invasive and innovative benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH/enlarged prostate) procedures for men and female urinary problems such as overactive bladder and incontinence. He offers many minimally invasive techniques and procedures with minimal recovery times.

In his free time, Dr. Kelley is a member of the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce where he participates in patient education events to help spread awareness regarding men’s health issues. There’s no doubt where his inspiration comes from though. “I’m most passionate about my family,” he said. “My beautiful wife, three daughters, and extended family are the most important things in the world to me. They’re the reason for everything I do.”
