Dr. Mila McManus, founder of The Woodlands Institute for Health & Wellness, always knew she wanted to work in the medical field. Growing up, her father was a researcher and professor at Baylor College of Medicine and her mother was a behavioral scientist. What really drove her to pursue a career in medicine, though, was a desire to get to the bottom of why she always felt so awful.

“I was sick my whole life. I thought becoming a doctor would teach me how to heal myself and others, but what I really learned was how to prescribe a pill for every ill. Conventional medicine wasn’t fixing anything,” she says. “As a family practice doctor, I began to feel like I wasn’t doing anything to help my patients. I prescribed medication after medication to a revolving door of sick people.”

When Dr. McManus first learned about functional medicine, she says it struck a chord deep in her soul. Instead of just treating symptoms, functional medicine focuses on addressing the root causes of illness. It emphasizes a holistic view of health, exploring the interconnectedness of bodily systems and optimizing the body’s natural functions.

Patients come from all over the United States for help with issues like autoimmune diseases, cancer, chronic fatigue, depression, gut issues, migraines, and more. “When patients come to us, we’re often their last hope,” she says. “It’s so rewarding to see the change in patients and give them hope where they had none.”

Dr. McManus adds, “I’ve always wanted to have an exceptional team who would provide excellent customer service. My wish came true. I couldn’t be prouder of my team.”

Dr. McManus combines the science of traditional medicine with the wisdom of natural holistic approaches, wholesome nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices. She has become known as a trusted functional medicine specialist, voted Best Of in three categories in Living Magazine’s Readers’ Choice awards, including Best Functional Medicine Doctor.

Her book, “Highway to Health: A Nutritional Roadmap” is an information- packed guide that covers topics like whole foods, tips for maintaining a healthy gut, and blood sugar balance.
