Best Ophthalmologist in McKinney & Allen

For nearly four decades, Heritage Eye Center, now an affiliate of Key Whitman Eye Center, has been helping people enjoy a better life through better vision. The practice offers a wide range of services, including advanced cataract surgery, custom LASIK, glaucoma treatments, and more, all in a warm, welcoming, and caring environment.

“We’re the most established ophthalmology group in McKinney, serving the community since 1982,” says Chief Surgeon Dr. Sanjay K. Patel, who was voted by Living readers as the Best Ophthalmologist in 2024. “We are fortunate and honored to have our patients trust us with their eyes.”

Heritage Eye Center is proud to offer LASIK among its many services, thanks to the addition of Dr. Joshua Heczko, a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in diagnosing and treating eye disorders. Dr. Heczko says LASIK can be life-changing for anyone who wants to see better without glasses or contacts. “LASIK offers a new found freedom in our patients’ lives. Imagine waking up and seeing the world clearly without fumbling for glasses or contacts,” he says.

If you’re thinking about getting LASIK, you might be pleasantly surprised not only by the swift recovery time but also by how seamless the whole experience can be. “LASIK has improved so much over the last two decades,” Dr. Heczko says. “Most patients experience significant vision improvement in just a day or so. It’s much less stressful than they anticipate as well, with the procedure being virtually painless and taking only minutes to perform. Most patients walk away stating it was a lot easier than they expected.”

In addition to LASIK, Heritage Eye Center also provides essential services like cataract surgery. Dr. Patel emphasizes the importance of addressing cataracts as soon as they’re starting to impact your quality of life. “Patients often wonder when they should come in for cataract surgery,” he says. “The answer is when vision becomes symptomatic — when street signs become blurry or daily activities become challenging due to your vision.”

Dr. Patel specializes in cataract surgery and has a special interest in diabetic eye diseases, glaucoma, and general eye care. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the Dallas Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Patel has also instructed and trained residents in performing cataract surgery at Southwestern Medical School and Parkland Hospital.

Dr. Patel finds the greatest fulfillment in enhancing his patients’ quality of life. “Vision is our most vital sense. It allows us to experience the world around us,” he says. “When someone’s vision is impaired, it significantly affects their overall well-being.”

Thanks to the recent addition of Dr. Dania Tassabhji, a board-certified optometrist, Heritage Eye Center is also expanding its offerings with new treatments for dry eyes and eyelid conditions, making it a one-stop destination for comprehensive eye care. “We’re here to treat our patients the way we want to be treated,” Dr. Patel says. “I always like to give my patients options, ensuring they feel involved in their care.” Your eyes deserve the best.
