Q&A

Aren’t All Pool Builders About The Same?

That’s a myth and a reason why quotes can vary widely. The expense depends on how elaborate your pool design is, but there are more subtle things you may not be aware of, such as the quality of the materials and technology used, and how it’s plumbed.

Another issue is hidden shortcuts taken to come in with a low-ball bid. We recently helped a homeowner whose pool tiles fell off within a year because the pool builder didn’t install them correctly. In this case, cost-cutting upfront caused them to spend more money in the end. Simply put, you get what you pay for.

Additionally, avoid pool size explained in gallons versus surface square footage. A smaller, deeper pool can hold more gallons than a larger, more shallow pool.

What Are Some Pool Design And Style Trends You’re Seeing?

Clients continue to favor more modern and streamlined designs, and they’re choosing sand-blasted marble pavers with good traction and porcelain pavers versus travertine and limestone. Light-colored natural stone is cool on the feet, and marble is denser, so it holds up better.

Regarding pool upkeep and maintenance technology, in-floor cleaning systems are preferred over robotic systems. They’re stealthy and clean, not only for the main floor of the pool but also for the steps, benches, and spas.

Energy-saving is also important today. LED pool lights use less energy and come in a variety of colors. Major energy savings involves using variable-speed pumps, which are mandatory today. In my opinion, the main thing is educating the homeowner on how to use their variable speed pump, which we do with our clients.

Inflation Is Still Elevated. Should I Wait To Build My Pool After Prices Come Down?

The good news is that supply chain issues have mostly cleared up. As for prices, they’re not likely to drop. In all my years in the pool-building business, I’ve never seen prices drop. They may begin to level off, but they don’t get lower. Also, consider that inflation will continue to rise, even if it’s at a lower rate. The bottom line is if you want to build a pool, the best time is now.

What Are Some Red Flags To Look For When Choosing A Pool Builder?

Requiring a large deposit upfront before work starts is a red flag. The builder may have financial issues and is trying to keep the cash flow going. A quote that’s substantially cheaper also warrants skepticism. As the saying goes, if it’s too good to be true, it usually is.

Look for experience, industry longevity, and a solid reputation. Unfortunately, pop-up pool companies enter the Houston market come and go, which adds risk for an unsuspecting homeowner. If the builder offers a workmanship warranty, what good is it if the company is no longer around?

Lastly, follow your instincts. You should feel comfortable and confident that the pool builder you select is honest, trustworthy, and represents quality.
