After an accident left her with a
traumatic brain injury, a patient we’ll call “Molly” needed more than just
physical therapy. She needed to work with a speech therapist and an
occupational therapist. Not only was Baylor Scott & White Outpatient
Rehabilitation- Rowlett able to provide her with all three outpatient
therapies in one location but that location was within 15 minutes of her
home. And the staff at Baylor Scott & White Outpatient
Rehabilitation-Rowlett worked to schedule all her appointments in succession
so she didn’t have to return multiple times to be seen by all the therapists
she needed.
After just a few visits to the facility,
located across the street from Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-
Rowlett, the staff knew Molly by name and greeted her at every appointment
with warmth and good cheer. They developed a treatment plan tailored
specifically to her needs and celebrated each milestone with her as she
worked to improve.
Multidisciplinary
Therapy
Often, when a patient has experienced a
stroke or traumatic brain injury or is suffering from a degenerative
condition such as Parkinson’s, they will require several types of therapy.
For many, this means their days are gobbled up trekking from medical office
to medical office juggling multiple appointments. With a staff of licensed
physical therapists, occupational
therapists, and speech therapists, Baylor Scott & White
Outpatient Rehabilitation – Rowlett can
provide comprehensive and engaging therapies, with the goal of
restoring healthy function and independence, and they can do it all in one
location.
“We want to provide our patients with all the
therapy they need right here where they already feel comfortable,” said Renea
Willmon, director of rehabilitation at
Baylor Scott & White Outpatient Rehabilitation –
Rowlett. “Not only do they no longer have to drive into Dallas to see
licensed therapists, but they don’t even have to run all over Rowlett to
access the care they need. We’ll partner with them and coordinate their care
right here in their own backyard. We also have patients coming to us from
Rockwall, Garland, Mesquite, Wiley, and Balch Springs.”
The cheery, light-filled, 3,000-square-foot
facility offers ample parking and a friendly staff. It features an open gym
as well as private treatment areas. “Patients become family,” Renea said.
“Together we guide them through their medical journey.” They do this by
connecting with patients and caregivers,
directing them toward community resources they need, providing
education to families about how to care for their loved one, and
welcoming patients and caregivers to play an active role in their
care.
Pelvic Health
and More
“In addition to traditional physical therapy
(PT) and occupational therapy (OT), we also offer pelvic floor therapy for
patients with urinary incontinence or those experiencing post-radiation issues,” Renea said. “Our
occupational therapists can fit patients with custom splints.
Our speech therapists are Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) certified to
work with patients suffering with Parkinson’s disease as well as trained in a
special dysphasia protocol for swallowing issues, something that until
recently wasn’t available in our area.”
Speech
Therapy
Speech therapy services are provided for
patients seeking to regain speech following an injury or health event, such
as a stroke. They also work with patients who have difficulty in swallowing
and/or cognitive deficits and memory problems. Patients may receive training
in speech and language skills, cognitive and memory skills, oral motor
musculature strengthening, and swallow evaluations, including Modified Barium
Swallows. A new program being offered now is cough control for patients who
have experienced chronic cough for years with no relief.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy services are designed
to enhance the functional independence
of each patient. Baylor Scott
& White occupational
therapists provide stroke and neurological rehabilitation, upper extremity
orthopedics, splinting, edema
management, adaptive equipment
education, energy conservation/work simplification training,
arthritis management,
visual/cognitive deficits, and
home-management retraining.
Physical
Therapy
Physical
therapy includes both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services including
post-surgical rehabilitation, orthopedic impairments and injuries,
neurological impairments like
stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease, adaptive equipment,
and home management retraining.

Patients and
caregivers can stay connected with staff using MyBSWHealth, a secure,
online tool that connects
patients to their personal
health information 24/7. They
can schedule an appointment,
communicate with staff and
manage their account through
their computer or smartphone.

Occupational
therapists and physical therapists are different but work closely together.
Physical therapy involves focusing on movement and regaining strength after
an injury. Occupational therapy focuses on increasing independence to
complete daily activities at home or at work. Speech therapy focuses on
treating complications that affect speech, language, and swallowing
abilities.Vision therapy is behavioral/perceptual therapy consisting of eye
exercises to improve visual processing and visual field.
Some Baylor
Scott & White Outpatient Rehabilitation – Rowlett patients require
only one of these disciplines, but many need a combination either on an
inpatient or outpatient basis.
