Behind the Scenes with Danh Ta - - Archived

We asked fashion designer Danh Ta to reveal his thoughts behind creating this custom look for Living Magazine.

How long have you been designing?

I’ve been designing for around nine years, from intern to assistant designer, designing womenswear corporately, and later leaving all that behind to start my own label. I also do custom orders and tailoring.

What inspired you to create this look?

I was inspired by Jackson Pollock’s Convergence painting at the Dallas Museum of Art.

What was your process in creating this suit?

I knew the suit would have to be constructed in pieces first. I laid each fabric piece apart and applied many coats of paint. The technique Pollock used was a dripping effect which was difficult to implement, so I did my interpretation of it by using acrylic paint instead of oils.

Why did you choose a light linen?

I chose the light linen because I wanted an off-white base that represented a canvas. There’s also a light hint of gold squares repeated throughout the fabric for a unique, personal touch.

Are you planning on extending this into a collection?

There are always possibilities… I hope to create a variety of pieces.

What was your favorite part of this entire process?

My favorite part of this entire process was working together with Jen and an amazing crew for Living Magazine, and having the opportunity to create a custom inspired suit for the magazine. I loved the process and can’t wait for everyone to see the May issue!
