Features vary by model, but many video doorbells provide night vision, facial recognition, voice control, and high-definition video. Some home security companies also offer optional storage plans that allow you to store motion-triggered video clips in the cloud.

Entryway sensors. When placed on doors and windows, sensors will alert you immediately if one opens when it shouldn’t. You can choose from wireless and wired sensors, with variations between contact sensors, glass-break sensors, and motion sensors.

Contract length. Does the company require long-term contracts, or can you go month to month? A contract may not be an issue if you plan to stay in your home for the foreseeable future. But if you rent or move often, you should look for no-contract home security companies. Quick response time. Ask how long the company’s monitoring center takes to reach out when a security breach is detected. Look for companies that reach out in 30 seconds or less. Helpful customer service. How fast can you get an employee on the phone? Does the company offer live chat options? Make sure you choose a home security company with a strong track record of satisfied customers.
