A Place for Children with Autism | Marigold Learning Academy

Expanding compassionate ABA therapy services across DFW
Marigold Learning Academy

Karri Shojaei-Wilson’s journey into ABA therapy began with her own family. As a mother of a son with learning differences, she saw firsthand the challenges faced by children who need more individualized support. This personal experience, combined with her background as a teacher and principal in Dallas, fueled her passion to create a school that could bridge the gap for children with autism and learning challenges. She envisioned a center that would not only address behavioral needs but also create a nurturing, inclusive environment where children could thrive.

“When I realized that so many children on the spectrum were underserved in our community, I knew I had to do something,” Karri said. “I wanted to build a place that provided more than just therapy —a place where kids would feel safe, understood, and empowered to succeed.”

This vision became a reality when she opened Marigold Learning Academy in Rockwall. Since that time, Marigold has expanded to five locations across DFW, each providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy including a ranch for animal-assisted therapy and the newest center in White Rock. “Marigold’s growth reflects the incredible demand for a compassionate, personalized approach to ABA therapy,” Karri said.

Innovative Therapy and Education Programs for Children with Autism

At the heart of Marigold’s success is its unique approach to ABA therapy. The academy specializes in children aged 18 months to 10 years, with an accredited academic program that extends through 3rd grade. Their innovative model immerses students in structured, mock classrooms where they receive individualized therapy. This hands-on, real-world approach helps children develop the skills they need to transition into mainstream schools with neurotypical peers.

“We’ve created an inclusive setting where kids are set up to succeed,” Karri said. “Every child at Marigold is given the tools they need not only for academic readiness, but to thrive in everyday life.”

A Tiered Leadership Program Driving Collaboration

One of the key components of Marigold’s success is its tiered leadership program. This multi-level model allows team members to focus on various areas while fostering a collaborative working environment. The goal is to ensure every member of the team is aligned with Marigold’s overarching mission: serving the children. “It’s about building a community where everyone has a role and contributes to the same goal — helping children succeed.”

This model encourages a shared sense of responsibility and allows Marigold’s team to address the diverse needs of its students effectively, ensuring each child receives the highest quality of care.

New Innovations: Apple-Powered Computer Labs and Online Learning

This year, Marigold introduced state-of-the-art computer labs, thanks to a generous donation of Apple computers. The integration of an online learning platform has revolutionized how students learn, offering personalized instruction tailored to their individual abilities.

“With the new technology, we can provide students with the confidence they need to succeed in school,” Karri said. “It’s all about helping children reach their full potential.”

Partnerships, Internships, and the MY Social Buddy Program

Community collaboration is a cornerstone of Marigold’s mission. The academy partners with local colleges and high schools to train and mentor future therapists and educators. Through these partnerships, Marigold offers internship opportunities that provide invaluable experience for those passionate about special education.

One of Marigold’s most innovative offerings is the “MY Social Buddy” program, a seven-week course developed in collaboration with a doctoral-level occupational therapist. This program incorporates interaction with pets to help children develop essential social skills like empathy, responsibility, and non-verbal communication — skills that are often targeted in ABA, speech, and occupational therapy.

“The MY Social Buddy program is really exciting because it uses the natural bond between children and animals to foster growth,” Karri said. “Through caring for and playing with animals, children learn skills they can apply in social settings, both at school and in the community.”

A Nonprofit Removing Barriers to Access

In addition to Marigold’s therapy services, Karri and her team are deeply committed to making their programs accessible to all families, regardless of financial circumstances. To that end, Marigold’s nonprofit arm raises funds to assist parents with tuition, transportation costs, and other resources that may pose barriers to accessing the therapy their children need.

“Our nonprofit exists because we believe no child should be denied access to care due to financial barriers,” Karri said. “Whether it’s providing a gas card to help a parent get to therapy sessions or assisting with tuition, we’re here to make sure families can focus on what matters most — helping their children thrive.”

A Vision for the Future: Camp Marigold and National Expansion

Looking ahead, Karri is excited about Marigold’s future. Plans are already underway for Camp Marigold, an outdoor learning environment where children can engage in animal-assisted therapy and nature-based activities. This camp will be a unique extension of Marigold’s current programs, providing children with opportunities to learn in a natural setting that fosters growth and development.

In addition to Camp Marigold, Karri is leading efforts to expand Marigold beyond Texas, with new locations planned in multiple states. These future academies will continue Marigold’s commitment to sensory-sensitive environments, like the third-floor Dallas location that features large windows and integrates the calming influence of natural light into the therapy setting.

Awards and Recognition

Over the past 12 years, Marigold’s impact on the autism community has been recognized with numerous awards, including nominations for Best Therapy Center and Best Early Intervention in the Lakeside area for three consecutive years. Karri credits her dedicated team for these accomplishments, noting that their compassion and expertise are what truly make Marigold special.

“Our team is what makes this all possible,” she said. “Their compassion drives the continued success of the program and helps us meet the evolving needs of the autism community.”

As Marigold continues to grow, Karri remains as passionate as ever about her work. “People tell me I’m special because of what I do, but I believe it’s because I’m living my best life working with staff who share my passion. Together, we’re creating something that will leave a lasting impact on children, families, and the communities we serve.”
