Lakeside Eye Care Sebastian Mirabal, OD, PA
Sebastian Mirabal, OD

For more than two decades, patients across Texas and far beyond have trusted Dr. Sebastian Mirabal with one of their most vital senses. This year marks 20 years since he opened his practice, Lakeside Eye Care, a milestone that reflects why Living Magazine is recognizing him as a Top Doc.

Dr. Mirabal is a graduate of the University of Houston College of Optometry, where he specialized in ocular therapeutics and the treatment of eye disease. He completed advanced clinical training in Austin with a focus on glaucoma and general eye disease and has been in active practice since 2000. A Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, Dr. Mirabal has gone beyond entry-level licensure to demonstrate advanced knowledge and continued excellence in patient care. He is also a member of both the Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.

Opened in 2006, Dr. Mirabal’s practice has evolved into one of the nation’s most sought-after dry eye centers. For the past 14 years, dry eye has been a core specialty, drawing patients from as far as Dubai, Poland, and Canada. “Dry eye is multifactorial,” Dr. Mirabal says. “It can be related to aging, prior eye surgery, inflammation, rosacea, or meibomian gland disease. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.”

What sets the practice apart is its highly specialized dry eye clinic and tear lab. Using advanced diagnostics, Dr. Mirabal can analyze tear composition, image meibomian glands, and determine whether glands are clogged, damaged, or atrophying. “A lot of patients come to us after being told to just use drops,” he says. “But without sophisticated imaging and diagnostics, you’re guessing. We don’t guess.”

Treatment options include advanced IPL therapy performed safely on the eyelids, meibomian gland probing, prescription medications, and customized care plans based on precise diagnostics. “This isn’t spa-level IPL,” Dr. Mirabal says. “The technology we use is medical-grade and designed to treat disease.”

Equally important is Dr. Mirabal’s emphasis on medical eye exams. Unlike vision exams, which focus on glasses or contact lens prescriptions, medical eye exams evaluate the health of the eye’s tissues and screen for disease. “The eye gives us a window into the body,” he says. “Conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension often show signs in the eyes first. Annual medical eye exams, especially after 40, are critical.”

After more than 20 years in practice, what remains most rewarding is impact. “When dry eye patients can’t function at work or enjoy daily life, it’s devastating,” he says. “Giving them more good days than bad days — that’s why I do this.”
