From humble beginnings in Bulgaria to the forefront of neurosurgical innovation in Texas, Dr. Tanya Dixon’s journey is one defined by discipline, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serve. Today, as a neurosurgeon at Axis Brain and Back Institute, she is not only transforming lives in the operating room but also redefining what it means to lead in medicine.
After immigrating to the United States just after high school, Dr. Dixon pursued her education with determination — earning her undergraduate degree from Dallas Baptist University, completing medical training, and advancing through a rigorous neurosurgery residency in Columbus, Ohio. She further honed her expertise with a prestigious fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, an experience that shaped both her technical skill and her leadership perspective.
Throughout her career, Dr. Dixon has played a pivotal role in launching stroke and trauma programs, most recently serving as director of neurotrauma at Medical City Alliance, where she is helping develop comprehensive neurosurgical services. In private practice, she is equally focused on innovation, contributing to the development of minimally invasive devices for treating brain aneurysms.
Yet for Dr. Dixon, leadership extends far beyond clinical excellence. “I believe in leading by example,” she says. “Not as a tyrant, but with a servant’s heart — being part of the solution, working alongside others, and lifting them up.” It’s a philosophy she applies daily, whether mentoring colleagues or collaborating across disciplines to provide patients with holistic care.
At Axis Brain and Back Institute, that philosophy comes to life through a multidisciplinary approach that considers not just the physical condition, but also the mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of each patient. “When patients come to see me, I want them to feel like family,” she explains. “It’s not just about surgery — it’s about caring for the whole person.”
Her inspiration for this balanced leadership style begins at home. Dr. Dixon credits her husband as her greatest example, particularly in raising their four adopted children. “He’s shown me what it means to lead a family with strength and compassion,” she says. “Together, we’ve focused on helping our children feel valued and empowered to pursue a better future.”
That same spirit of generosity extends into the community, where Dr. Dixon and her family actively support numerous charitable causes, including efforts to combat human trafficking and provide clean water in underserved regions. “Giving back is essential,” she says simply.
Despite the demands of neurosurgery, Dr. Dixon remains deeply motivated by the impact of her work. “We have the ability to physically change someone’s life,” she says. “Whether it’s relieving pain or treating a life-threatening condition, those moments are incredibly meaningful. It’s what keeps me going.”
In every aspect of her life, Dr. Tanya Dixon exemplifies leadership rooted in humility, service, and purpose — proving that true influence comes not from authority, but from the lives you uplift along the way.
