Patients of Craig Ranch OB/GYN have a lot to say about the care they receive there. They praise doctors who engage in “a personable conversation with you to remove the awkwardness from an exam, never rush, take time to answer any questions, and come across as a true ally.”

Happy patients write of the providers and the staff as “personable and knowledgeable, comforting and communicative, empathetic and thorough, kind and gentle, efficient and professional.” They praise on-time appointments, genuine eye contact from doctors, undivided attention, and providers who obviously love their jobs. But perhaps the greatest endorsement comes from the women who recommended Craig Ranch not only to their friends and coworkers but to their own mothers and daughters.

I guess it’s no surprise that Craig Ranch OB/GYN has been a top OB/GYN practice in McKinney since it opened in 2000. Founding Physician, Dr. Andrew Shimer, set the tone early for a practice that puts patients first. He then hand selected seven board certified physicians, two certified nurse midwives, two physician assistants, and a nurse practitioner to join him. The newest of those is Dr. Rawan Darwich.

Growing up, Rawan says there was never a time she didn’t want to become a doctor. Once in medical school, she was attracted to areas of study that included a lot of procedures and was as surprised as anyone when obstetrics and gynecology turned out to be her favorite. “I fell in love with delivering babies and can’t imagine doing anything else,” she said. “It’s such a privilege for me to be welcomed in as part of a family at this most wonderful time in their lives. There’s really nothing like it.”

Medical school and residency were intense for Rawan, especially when you consider she was pregnant during her residency — twice! But one particular recent delivery brought it all into perspective for her. “It’s been a real whirlwind,” she said. “My husband is from Ohio, and I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. We chose McKinney for my medical career and his legal career primarily because it’s such as amazing place to raise our children. But the relocation was exhausting. We have a two-year-old and six-month-old and we’re both away from family. It was a lot!”

That day, however, Dr. Darwich delivered a patient. “It was her second baby, and it was a beautiful vaginal birth. The baby came out screaming and perfect. Everyone was so happy. At that moment, I knew I was right where I was meant to be. I told the patient the next day, not only did she remind me what it had all been for, but she also made me want to have another baby.”

It’s those doctor/patient connections that make the difference for that woman and all the others who call Craig Ranch OB/GYN their medical home. “I try to offer my patients open dialogue,” Dr. Darwich said. “I want to make sure I’m meeting all their needs in the time we have together. I never want a patient to leave me with an unanswered question but want them to understand all their options.”

Craig Ranch OB/GYN providers have been trained at some of the most prestigious programs in the country. Dr. Darwich is no exception. After receiving her undergraduate degree from University of South Carolina, she completed her medical training at The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and completed an intensive residency at Las Palmas Del Sol Medical Center in El Paso.

She was attracted to Craig Ranch OB/GYN because, among other things, they truly listen to the services and amenities their patients want and go out of their way to provide them. Just a few of those services are complete high-risk pregnancy management, in-office mammography, on-staff midwives, and in-office surgical procedures, including endometrial ablations.

In-office mammography means Craig Ranch patients can see their doctor for both their annual exam and their annual mammogram in just one appointment, eliminating the need for a trip to an imaging center.

Few things are scarier for a woman than a high-risk pregnancy. What she needs is a partner who’s as invested in her pregnancy as she is. Craig Ranch offers complete high-risk pregnancy management from just such a provider, including a full-time, in-office ultrasound technician and the ability to perform extra monitoring for those patients who need it. They also work closely with Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) doctors who help co-manage higher risk patients.

“A woman with diabetes, hypertension, or older maternal age are more prone to developing complications,” Dr. Darwich said. “For them we will recommend additional tests to further assess the health and development of the fetus. Additionally, a biophysical profile or ultrasound can provide her with more detailed information. We want to provide all the screening these higher-risk patients need.”

For parents desiring a more natural birth experience, Craig Ranch has experienced certified nurse-midwives. CNMs provide comprehensive prenatal care, including monitoring fetal growth, ordering, and interpreting tests, and educating women on birth options. They offer coaching and support during labor, focusing on low-intervention techniques and orchestrate the birth experience the mother wants to have, focusing on patients’ emotional, physical, cultural, and spiritual needs. They also offer education and training to support new mothers with breastfeeding. Craig Ranch OB/GYN provides services at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center McKinney and Medical
City McKinney.

As for Dr. Darwich, she couldn’t be happier being right where she is doing just what she’s doing. When not partnering with patients, she and her husband enjoy all the time they can with their kids and sometimes even steal a little time to cook together, watch movies, or even try out a new restaurant.
