Serving those who serve us has always been important to Dr. Stan Lowrance. For the past eight years, he’s found a unique way to say “thank you” to the men and women who willingly fight to keep our country free. “Dental Day for Veterans Day” also known as D-Day for V-Day, is a special event each year where local veterans have access to a full day of free dental care. This year the date will be Friday, November 7. Dr. Lowrance and his team will provide every veteran who participates with a health check, an oral cancer check, and treatment for their immediate dental needs and concerns.

Dr. Lowrance’s goal each year is to provide dental services to 100 veterans. He works with the local chapter of the American Legion, so he and 30 other dental volunteers can provide veterans with the quality dental care they deserve. The program has been so popular and has had such a positive impact on the lives of Rockwall-Heath veterans that Rockwall County Judge David Sweet and Mayor of Heath Kelson Elam passed a proclamation to make every Veterans Day in Rockwall County D-Day for V-Day.

Dr. Lowrance has been proud to lead that charge. “I’ve always taken care of veterans. My dad was a veteran, and he had four brothers who were veterans,” he said. “We should all respect the people who protect our liberty and freedom. I’m honored to give back in this one small way.”

Having immediate family members who served in the military left a lasting impression on Dr. Lowrance. He also credits his father with instilling in him a hard work ethic, integrity, and Christian values, traits that still make up who he is today, and motivate him to give back to his community and country. It’s no wonder Dr. Stan Lowrance was awarded the inaugural Rockwall Hometown Heroes Award in 2020.

Dr. Lowrance is also making a difference in the lives of his patients. Over 45 years as a family dentist, he’s seen dentistry become gentler, more efficient, less invasive, and more proactive. He has amassed a dynamic dental team including his daughter, Dr. Shanae Lowrance, Dr. Christina Leon, and the newest addition to the team, Dr. Rylie Dombrowski.

“The more my team and I can educate our patients about caring for their teeth and gums, the better able they are to maintain good oral health for life,” said Dr. Stan, as he’s affectionately known. That’s even more important now that science has linked gum disease to health problems throughout the body including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory diseases like pneumonia, low birth weights in babies, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain types of cancer.

Over the past four and a half decades, as his patients have requested, Dr. Stan has added more and more cosmetic dentistry to his practice. He has performed thousands of procedures such as tooth whitening, implant bridges, all-ceramic crowns, bonding, veneers, tooth reshaping, even full-mouth makeovers. One thing he wants his patients to understand is that, in many cases cosmetic dentistry isn’t just about aesthetics but also about improving oral health.

As he told a recent patient, “Cracks, chips, thinning enamel, bite misalignments, and tooth crowding can be corrected using crowns, veneers, or bonding. These corrections can protect the tooth from further damage, restore vital missing structures, and can make the teeth easier to brush and floss leading to improved oral health (and subsequently, improved overall health). We also find that when a patient invests in their smile, they also make a commitment to their oral hygiene to help keep that smile beautiful.”

When Dr. Stan first opened his practice in a much smaller Rockwall, many of the cosmetic procedures his patients have come to expect weren’t even available. In fact, one of the things he enjoys about a career in dentistry is that it requires him, Dr. Shanae, Dr. Christina, and Dr. Rylie to be lifelong learners. “There’s always something new we can learn to offer our patients more precise and more efficient dentistry,” he said. “We regularly attend dental symposia and trainings to stay at the forefront of the latest advancements in care. And I think it’s a real advantage that we have different generations working together to bring innovative treatments to our patients. We challenge one another and encourage each other to stay at the forefront of dental science.”

At the same time, they work to maintain the friendly, family atmosphere their patients have come to expect at Lowrance Dental. “We want our patients to understand any treatment recommendations we make,” Dr. Stan said. “So, it’s important for us to slow down and follow the patient’s lead. We’re a team and the more our patients understand about their oral healthcare, the more they can be active participants in that care.”
