BY Shannon Kuruvilla, MD
As a mother, a native Houstonian, and a plastic surgeon, I feel incredibly fortunate to live out my dream every single day — caring for women and men in the community that raised me. After medical school at the University of Texas at Houston followed by a rigorous integrated plastic surgery residency at the University of Virginia, I completed an aesthetic surgery fellowship here at Basu Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery.
My passion is not only about performing surgery; it is about building lasting relationships, listening to patients’ stories, and guiding them toward results that enhance confidence and quality of life. Every journey is deeply personal, and each procedure is tailored to the unique needs of the individual sitting across from me.
Restoring Confidence Through Mommy Makeovers
One of the most meaningful procedures I perform is the mommy makeover. Motherhood is a remarkable journey, but pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding often leave behind physical changes that diet and exercise cannot fully reverse. For many women, this disconnect between how they feel on the inside and what they see in the mirror can be discouraging.
A mommy makeover is not a single operation but a customized combination of procedures. For one woman, it might include a breast lift and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to repair stretched muscles. For another, it may mean liposuction, a breast reduction, or a labiaplasty. Some patients choose implants to restore volume, while others benefit from a full body lift. The artistry lies in assessing each woman’s physiology, listening to her goals, and designing a plan that respects her individuality.
Transformation Beyond the Operating Room
What I love most about mommy makeovers is witnessing transformation that goes far beyond the operating table. Restoring abdominal strength, refining body contours, or lifting the breasts often brings a renewed sense of vitality. Patients rediscover their confidence, carry themselves differently, and embrace daily life with more energy and joy.
Body Contouring for Men and Women
Plastic surgery is not only for women. Many of my male patients seek care after significant weight loss. They are proud of their accomplishments yet struggle with excess skin that causes discomfort, irritation, or self-consciousness.
Body contouring is never one-size-fits-all. Bone structure, skin quality, and lifestyle all shape the surgical approach. It may involve tightening loose skin, refining stubborn fat, or reshaping multiple areas to restore harmony.
Confidence That Extends Into Daily Life
The impact is not merely cosmetic. Patients often describe feeling “lighter” in every sense of the word. The confidence they gain inspires them to stay active, engage socially, and live more fully. My guiding principle in body contouring is always the same: create results that look natural, elegant, and true to the patient’s own body.
A Practice Built on Excellence and Care
I am grateful to practice at Basu Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery, where we combine surgical excellence with comprehensive, patient-centered care. Our state-of-the-art facilities, highly trained staff, and rigorous safety protocols create an environment where patients feel supported and secure from their first consultation to recovery.
Integrating Health, Beauty, and Wellness
What sets our practice apart is the ability to integrate surgical and non-surgical treatments for holistic results. Beyond the operating room, we support patients through our weight-loss clinic, bioidentical hormone pellet program, and medical-grade aesthetic services that maintain skin health. This multidisciplinary approach allows us to build long-term relationships, guiding patients not just through surgery but through ongoing wellness and self-care.
Redefining Plastic Surgery: Self-Care, Not Vanity
Plastic surgery is not about changing who someone is. It is about helping people feel more like themselves — comfortable, confident, and free. Sometimes that means easing chronic pain through migraine surgery. Sometimes it means restoring a mother’s body after pregnancy. Other times it’s simply refining a feature that has caused someone discomfort for years.
As a female surgeon and a mother, I understand the courage it takes for patients to prioritize themselves. Too often, women in particular put their own needs last. My mission is to remind them that investing in themselves is not vanity — it is self-care. When we feel confident in our skin, we are better equipped to live fully, love deeply, and give generously.
Why I Chose This Path
Every day I am reminded of why I chose this profession: to blend science and artistry in
service of real people, with real goals, living real lives. Whether performing a complex mommy makeover, offering migraine relief, or simply listening to someone’s story, I am humbled by the trust my patients place in me.
