After years of working in a busy Dallas hospital, Olivia Delavega couldn’t shake the feeling that birth didn’t have to be so clinical, so full of interventions. She saw women pushed through a system that often overlooked the natural, powerful process of childbirth. Her belief that there was a better way became the seed for Sweet Pea Midwifery. Today, her practice is dedicated to giving women a gentler, more empowering way to bring their babies into the world.

Sweet Pea Midwifery offers a full spectrum of care, including preconception counseling, prenatal visits, labor and delivery support at home, postpartum care, well-woman exams, and gentle circumcision services. What sets Olivia apart is her advanced nursing degree, allowing her to offer a broader scope of services.

With clinical experience across hospitals, birth centers, and home births, Olivia found her passion not just in midwifery but also in home birth specifically. “I was lucky to experience home births during my training,” she says. “It’s completely different. The peace, the autonomy — it’s transformative.”

Olivia says many women are unnecessarily labeled high-risk by their obstetricians. “I always look deeper,” she says. “I love being the one to say, ‘Actually, you have options.’ And then they go on to have the redemptive birth they never imagined possible.”

Olivia’s faith plays a central role in her practice. “God already knows the outcome. That allows me to trust the process, to be patient with labor and avoid unnecessary intervention,” she says. It’s a mindset that infuses her care with calm, grace, and reverence for the natural rhythm of birth.

With over 100 births attended and counting, Olivia’s vision is simple but powerful: “There’s never been a better time to bring birth back to the home.”

Olivia provides the highest-quality, evidence-based, holistic healthcare that is both woman-centered and physiologically sensitive. Olivia also skillfully practices the art of “doing nothing,” which is at the heart of midwifery. “I firmly believe that it is the place of the midwife and other attendants to provide the woman a safe and conducive environment for birth,” she says, “and to patiently allow the woman to birth her baby free from needless intervention.”

She believes the pandemic accelerated the rising interest in home birth. “Women started asking questions. They realized they didn’t have to accept the medicalized version of birth,” she says. “It’s not that midwives reject medicine — we bring it when it’s needed. But we also bring trust, time, and respect for a woman’s ability to birth.”

If you’re curious about midwifery, Olivia offers free consultations in person and by phone. “I love answering questions, helping people untangle misconceptions,” she says. “We’re trained medical professionals. We carry equipment and medications, and we know when to transfer if needed. But 85% of women can safely birth at home — and most never knew that was even an option.”
