While Janelle Flatt has been growing Janelle Alexis Salon into the finest Houston-area destination for hair styling and beauty services, she also continued to grow in the other areas of her life and to share what she’s learned in all those aspects. She has found her place as a leading woman in the Houston community, both in running a business and offering support for others.
When you consult this team with more than 100 years of combined experience, you will find everything you’re looking for in beauty care. Hair offerings include everything from cut and style to color highlights, ombre, and corrective color. Five kinds of hair extensions are available. Hair treatments include Brazilian blowout, Keratherapy, Kera Rx, and more. Hair and makeup for weddings can be enjoyed at the salon or at the wedding venue.
Janelle prides herself in creating an increasingly diverse environment with more and more new services, bringing on talented stylists who can work with multi-diverse ethnic skin and hair. Her team members are trained to accommodate every ethnicity.
Janelle herself has received training and certification in Master Color, The Wella Color Academy In New York Cutting and Styling, The Aquage and Vidal Sassoon Academy Smoothing and Permanent Straightening Systems, Brazilian Keratin Treatments, Micro-Link, Fusion, and Tape Ins, Weft Hair, and the newest v-light extensions Babe Hair Certified, Bellami, NBR (Natural Beaded Rows), and makeup certifications.
In the hair-coloring department, Janelle has become known as the “Blond Master.” It’s also no surprise that she excels with hair extensions, as she spent part of her career training stylists in just that art. One of the stylists at Janelle Alexis Salon is an expert in balayage, a technique involving free-hand painting highlights onto the hair, creating a soft and natural gradation of lightness towards the ends. Another holds expertise in hair and makeup.
Continuing education in their field is one of the foundations of this team. Additional learning keeps them at the cutting edge of their business and allows them to offer the latest to clients in a warm, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere. They listen to clients carefully, offering their expertise to advance the client’s goals and needs. Following Janelle’s lead, the staff shares their learning with junior stylists, helping them build the confidence to excel in their chosen field.
Here’s what one client had to say: “I have been going to Janelle Alexis Salon for all my beauty needs for more than five years. They have done extensions, very difficult blonde color, cuts, blowouts, special occasion makeup and updos, and lash extensions. They do it all!”
A Special Connection
In addition to providing the finest services you will find anywhere, Janelle and her team make it their goal to make each guest feel like part of the family. Janelle literally grew up in the beauty business, sweeping floors and answering the phone at her mom’s salon by the time she was 12. Now her own daughter is pursuing cosmetology school and will soon make Janelle a grandmother.
Janelle began working as the receptionist before age 18, learning customers’ voices, names, and numbers in order to quickly and efficiently provide just what they needed.
She later went to work at a salon in Houston, which employed 60, half stylists and half barbers. In 2009, Janelle began traveling as an educator for hair extensions. She quickly moved up the ladder from a local educator to national and then to international.
Janelle opened her own salon in 2016. Originally staffed with two stylists, the business has grown to a team of 10. The space has undergone several remodels, in which Janelle has participated fully.
Their two emotional support dogs, Gizmo and Luna, welcome clients and share snuggles to make the experience relaxing as well as reinvigorating. More and more studies have shown the value of animals, especially dogs, in bringing comfort and improving mental health. Luna wears a dress to “work” every day and receives one new dress a month. Gizmo is famous for his “kisses.” Guests look forward to their visits.
Sharing Her Struggles
Janelle takes pride in the connective aspect of the beauty business, sharing her expertise in beauty as well as the wisdom she has gained from life struggles. She is open about her own challenges in facing mental health and speaks on women’s panels sharing with intentionality. She has recently found help in ancient practices in which she has found clarity and guidance for managing life’s stresses.
“We’re all figuring out our purpose,” Janelle says. “You have to make it your mission to release your trauma and heal yourself.”
Part of this journey for Janelle has included a recent visit to Peru where her time was immersed with grounding, healing, and taking part in Ayahuasca. She shares what she has learned with the next generation, hoping to share
encouragement and wisdom.
Another way that Janelle chooses to give back is a new venture helping other small businesses with their social media. She is working towards a master’s degree in strategic communications with an emphasis in media management.
Her new jewelry line, called “Authentically Beautiful,” is allowing Janelle to express her creativity and her belief in the strength of other women.
“I really believe in women’s empowerment,” she says. “What you’ve been through doesn’t define you. Sometimes other people’s choices cause you trauma, but I’ve chosen to really embrace life and heal with some unconventional practices with Shamans.”
When you visit Janelle Alexis Salon, you will find a friendly team that can meet all your beauty needs. They understand that to feel confident and free to express yourself, you need to feel good about how you look. With a convenient location and a welcome smile, they’ll help you feel good inside and out.
