North Texas’ Oldest Community Bank Celebrates 140 Years

There used to be a time when community banks, like PointBank, were a dime a dozen. Unfortunately, most have been absorbed by big-box brands through multiple acquisitions and have adopted impersonal styles towards customers and service. PointBank is the oldest community bank in North Texas. It was originally founded in 1884 — 140 years ago — as Pilot Point Bank and was officially chartered on July 13, 1892, as Pilot Point National Bank. In 1995, the name was shortened to PointBank. It is a family-run bank to this day, with various members of the David family leading the charge throughout the organization.

“Calling yourself a true community bank requires so much more than treating every customer like the only customer, being present in your community, and having an overall attitude toward service that doesn’t change no matter how much you grow,” said PointBank President Ray David, Jr. The bank employs over 100 individuals, and nearly all of them, as well as the shareholders and executives — some whom you rub shoulders with regularly — live right here in Denton County.

“Other banks may call themselves your community bank, but they really aren’t when you dig deeper and realize only their branches are local,” David said. “Their charter and operations are located in another county, which means their profits and a majority of salaries strengthen a different business economy than yours,” David continued. “Our ownership is in Denton County. Our executives are here. Our Operations Department is here. That means something to people.”

Most recently, PointBank was honored the third year in a row with the Texas Bankers Foundation Cornerstone Award for its stellar community impact record. In 2023 alone, the bank was awarded five community awards, including Best of Denton County for the 13th year in a row, Best of Denton, Best of Flower Mound, Best of Lewisville, and the LeadUnited Award. The Little Elm and Flower Mound branches were also named Business of the Year in their respective markets.

As PointBank celebrates its 140th anniversary, they shouldn’t have to convince you how important longevity is in banking. “It’s about knowing our customers, their families, and their businesses personally. It’s about them seeing us as their neighbors.

It’s knowing when they need help and being the community partner who can offer personalized solutions,” PointBank President Ray David Jr. said. “Our customers don’t want to bank anywhere else, and based on our longevity, they won’t ever have to.”

“Our mindset is full steam ahead, but what we do today and 20 years down the road will always be guided by the timeless principles we put in place 140 years ago,” David said. “I don’t know of a bank in North Texas that can match our longevity. We were there for you then; we’re here for you now, and we’ll be here for years to come.”
