Is it true that Botox can help with my TMJ pain?

Yes, Botox helps relax the muscles that are overworked when we clench and grind our teeth. Botox can relieve pain for three to six months. When you keep up with your prescribed regimen, the less you have to use it. Most patients initially get Botox every three to six months, but over time, the muscles become trained to relax and patients can reduce their visits to just once or twice a year.

What’s the difference between SureSmile and regular braces? Are children good candidates for SureSmile?

SureSmile is a clear aligner therapy that uses a system of 3D printed plastic retainers to move the teeth instead of traditional brackets and wires. The biggest difference is that there’s no metal and you can remove them. It’s also easier to eat and keep your teeth clean with clear plastic aligners. Children are great candidates as long as they will keep the aligners in their mouth. I recommend anyone who needs to move their teeth to talk to their dentist about the different options.

How often should I get my teeth professionally whitened?

I recommend consulting with a dental professional. At Welch Dental Group of Cypress, we have several different types of teeth whitening. One option is having professional whitening trays made and then bleaching at home. This is great for people who want to get their teeth a shade or two lighter and maintain it at home. Another option is doing an in-office whitening treatment, which takes about an hour and a half. This is great for people who might have a special event coming up and they want to get their teeth two to three shades whiter. We also make trays for them to maintain at home.

Is it better to use mouthwash in the morning or at night?

Whenever it works best for you. Using mouthwash is always a good thing. It might be most helpful before bed after you’ve brushed and flossed, and you’re done eating and drinking for the night. I recommend using one with fluoride and then not rinsing your mouth with water. This allows the fluoride to adhere to your teeth and protect against cavities.

I grind my teeth at night. Should I get an over-the-counter nightguard or have one custom made?

You can get an over-the-counter nightguard to determine if one will work for you. When you know you can keep it in your mouth, it’s best to have a custom-fit nightguard made. This is because they’re made from high-quality acrylic, so you’re less likely to grind through them. They’re also custom fit to your mouth and should last about five years. Over-the-counter nightguards aren’t customized to your bite, which can lead to an increase in jaw pain and headaches. Don’t worry if your nightguard gets a little buildup — that’s normal. Just bring it into your next dental cleaning and we’ll clean it for you.
