Q&A
Interior Designer
I can’t decide what kind of style I want in my home. Can you help?
When I work with clients, I ask for inspiration photos — it’s the quickest way to understand their style. Then, I analyze their home’s architecture. I consider textures, prints, and colors. Recently, a client wanted a mix of formal and farmhouse styles. We tailored it to her taste — formal with a farmhouse touch. It’s about customizing to fit the client’s preferences. It’s fun to blend styles and make it unique for each person.
What if unexpected expenses arise? Will I get another invoice?
I’ll never ask you for more money once we’ve agreed on the project. It’s my job to know what things cost, and if costs exceed estimates, it’s on me. We tackle one room at a time, providing a detailed breakdown of needed items like dressers and lamps. I purchased a Decorating Den franchise, so I have access to over 100 vendors. This allows me to accommodate diverse budgets with options ranging from good to better to best. Think of it like car shopping — are we shopping for a Toyota, Mercedes, or Porsche? The budget covers everything from items to warehouse fees to delivery, and once the budget is set, I source items accordingly.
Should I look for an interior designer who charges a flat fee or by the hour?
When it comes to hiring an interior designer, consider one who charges a flat fee. With relationships with wholesale vendors, I can help control your budget. I get wholesale prices and mark them for resale, ensuring transparency. Hourly rates can lead to unexpected costs, like hefty shipping fees. Clients who’ve worked with hourly-rate designers often find it a less-than-ideal experience. With a flat fee structure, you’ll have peace of mind knowing what to expect and can trust in a smoother, more cost-effective design process.
Do you integrate smart home tech into designs?
Smart home technology is here to stay. Many people already use motorized roller shades. Some of my clients have wanted lamps but have an open-concept layout and no floor outlets. Our solution is to modify lamps by trimming cords using smart bulbs compatible with Alexa or Google Home. It’s about adapting to modern needs. Embracing these advancements ensures seamless functionality in contemporary spaces, enhancing both aesthetics and convenience for clients.
Can you incorporate my existing furniture and décor pieces into your design?
I often incorporate clients’ existing furniture and decor pieces into the design. Clients usually have collected wonderful pieces over the years. Whether it’s a cherished sofa or a unique accent piece, I assess its quality and seamlessly integrate it into the overall design. When you share inspiration photos, I always keep your existing pieces in mind, ensuring a cohesive look that reflects your style and personality. So, whether it’s a traditional heirloom or a recent addition, your existing items become an integral part of the design journey.
