Q&A

Lactation Consultant

What is a lactation consultant?

A lactation consultant is a healthcare professional specializing in breastfeeding, postpartum care, and infant feeding. They support the holistic well-being of both mother and baby with guidance in various feeding techniques. Our team includes International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC), the highest credential in lactation education. Our consultants, some registered nurses, have completed extensive education, including a minimum of 95 hours of lactation-specific education and 1,000 hours of lactation clinical experience.

What led you to specialize in lactation consulting?

My passion to become an IBCLC ignited from my personal struggles while breastfeeding my own children. Despite being a nurse, I found I was lacking the knowledge and skill set to overcome the breastfeeding challenges that many patients and I were facing. I quickly learned the importance of an IBCLC and decided to jump in wholeheartedly.

What types of issues can your team help with?

Our team is equipped to address a variety of breastfeeding and infant feeding issues. From helping mothers with low milk supply to oversupply, bottle refusal to breast refusal, we help build a personalized plan for each family.  We also offer guidance and oral exercises for babies with poor sucking skills and tethered oral tissues. Our comprehensive care includes pumping strategies, transitioning to solid foods, and returning to work while breastfeeding.

What makes Bayou City Breastfeeding Consultants unique?

We provide more than just solutions to feeding challenges — we encompass the health and well-being of the mother and baby. Understanding that maternal health is pivotal to successful breastfeeding, we include strategies for managing postpartum recovery, optimal nutrition, emotional support, and practical advice for balancing motherhood with personal wellness. Our holistic approach ensures that mothers feel nurtured and supported, enabling them to nurture their babies more effectively. We engage in a long-term, comprehensive partnership with families. This includes well visits and ongoing assessments throughout a baby’s first two years, addressing and anticipating feeding challenges and developmental changes. This approach is effective as over 67% of our clients are still breastfeeding after 12 months, and 82% met their breastfeeding goals in 2022.

Can you explain how insurance coverage works for lactation consulting at Bayou City Breastfeeding Consultants?

Absolutely! We prioritize accessible, affordable care, with about 78% of our clients using insurance to cover all or part of their visits. Our practice accepts most major insurance plans and helps clients navigate their policies to maximize benefits. Our commitment is to make lactation support accessible to as many families as possible.
