In the evolving landscape of modern healthcare, hospitals are emerging as pioneers of innovation by embracing robotic surgery as a cornerstone of their patient care initiatives. Forward-thinking facilities are redefining surgical precision right in your backyard, all aimed at harnessing technology to give patients safe, quality care.

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Frisco is one of those leaders and is nationally recongnized as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. With a focus on minimally invasive techniques, the center offers patients the benefits of robotic surgery which aims for faster recovery times, reduced pain, and improved outcomes. Using robotic surgery platforms — including four da Vinci robotic systems and a Stryker Mako System — enhances precision and improves patient safety. Robotic surgery systems consist of robotic arms controlled by surgeons from a console, allowing precise and controlled movements during surgery. With minimally invasive techniques, robotic surgery allows surgeons to make small incisions, resulting in less trauma to the patient, faster recovery times and less scarring. The robotic arms’ enhanced dexterity, and accuracy allow for greater precision and intricate procedures in challenging areas on the body.

The Baylor Scott & White – Frisco surgeons receive specialized training and learn to control the robotic arms, interpret visual feedback, and perform procedures effectively and safely. In 2022, the physicians at Baylor Scott & White – Frisco performed more than 1,500 robotic surgeries. In 2023, the hospital expects to perform over 1,800.

“Patients who undergo robotic surgery often experience shorter hospital stays, reduced pain, faster recovery, and improved cosmetic outcomes,” said Dale Burleson, MD, a colorectal surgeon on the robotic surgery steering committee at Baylor Scott & White – Frisco. “The continuous innovation of robotics surgery allows us, as surgeons, to provide advanced care to our patients.”

Leadership in Robotic Surgery

Baylor Scott & White – Frisco was recently designated a Total Program Observation Center by Intuitive Surgical — the only center in Texas and one of nine in the United States — in recognition of its outstanding use of robotic-assisted technology. Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci Surgical System has revolutionized the field of minimally invasive surgery, allowing Baylor Scott & White – Frisco surgeons to perform complex procedures with precision and enhanced patient safety, better outcomes, and providing patients with some of the latest available technology, truly embracing the future of surgical innovation and patient-centered care.

The robotic surgery program is just one way Baylor Scott & White – Frisco goes above and beyond for the community it serves. Established as the first hospital in Frisco 20 years ago, it quickly emerged as a shining example of excellence and has continually sought innovative ways — like the Centers of Excellence — to set the bar high with top-notch medical services and exceptional patient care for its Frisco friends and neighbors.

As a registered nurse, Kara Klemo got plenty of hands-on experience working with patients in Baylor Scott & White – Frisco’s post-surgical unit, total-joint-replacement department, and spine program. Now, she’s taken all that experience and passion and applied it to her job as manager of the Baylor Scott & White – Frisco Centers of Excellence.

“Our job is to provide quality care for our patients in the total hip replacement, total knee replacement, total shoulder replacement, spinal surgery, and bariatric surgery departments,” she said. “We are the face of Baylor Scott & White – Frisco to the patient and their family, in their corner with the time to listen and educate them.”

That includes spending time with each patient daily, ensuring they’re on the path to recovery, providing pre-operative and post-operative education, and following up with patients for weeks after surgery.

“Nobody leaves the hospital without our phone number and a promise that we’ll be here for any questions or concerns they have after they’re discharged,” Kara said. “The majority of our team are nurses. We spend a long time going over discharge instructions, so our patients really feel ready and prepared to go home. We’re here to serve as the connection between the patient and the medical staff.”
