Tibor Racz had options. He felt drawn toward a career in medicine — surgery in particular — but unlike his fellow medical students, he also had a father who is a bit of a legend. “My father is an internationally known pain management doctor, now retired, who’s been credited with basically pioneering the specialty of pain management,” he said. “Throughout his career, patients traveled to him from around the world and, to this day, many pain management doctors include in their bios the fact that they trained under him.”
Tibor found out firsthand what a strict educator his father could be when he decided to pursue a career in pain management himself. “I was honored to study under my father during my pain management residency,” he said. “He was hard on me, being his son, but I learned more in that year than I did in any other. I was also lucky enough to study under Dr. Prithvi Raj, another celebrated pain management doctor.”
That was more than 20 years ago, and Dr. Tibor Racz has done his father proud with his own pain management career. Much has changed since the elder Dr. Racz revolutionized the specialty and even in the 20-plus years Tibor has himself been practicing. “The objective today is to help people with advanced procedures and interventional therapy to regain function and quality of life and not get stuck on high-dose opioids,” he said. “There are any number of new minimally invasive procedures to avoid surgery and minimize the reliance on medication.”
Although Dr. Racz is a highly trained and experienced surgeon, for him and his colleagues at Pain Treatment Institute, surgery is always a last resort after all conservative treatments have been explored. “We’re learning something new every day,” he said. “But we always want to begin with relationship. As the saying goes, ‘People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.’ When someone comes to Pain Treatment Institute, they’re often at the end of their rope and feeling hopeless. They feel alone and confused and like nobody understands what they’re going through. The first thing we want to do is really listen to them. Then, we want to offer them hope.”
Patient-First Philosophy
Each patient is unique, the pain they’re feeling is unique, and the root cause is unique. So, cookie-cutter care can never be the answer. That’s why the board certified physicians at the Allen, Frisco, Plano, McKinney, Sherman, Rockwall, and Mesquite PTI locations begin by asking very specific questions and carefully absorbing the answers. Then, they tailor a treatment plan that’s unique to each patient, always beginning with the most conservative measures, and only advancing if they need to.
Every day, Dr. Racz and his colleagues meet with patients suffering from back, neck, hip, knee, or other pain, neuropathy, migraines, or fibromyalgia. For these patients, treatment plans may include fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided injections, regenerative therapy, physical therapy, medication management, psychological counseling, and neuraxial manipulations or more minimally invasive procedures such as nerve blocks, steroid injections, and radiofrequency ablations when necessary. And because they understand how busy their patients are, they pride themselves in fast scheduling and minimal wait times.
Coordinating Care
Dr. Racz and his colleagues work collaboratively with their patients’ other providers, whether that’s a GP, orthopedic surgeon, chiropractor, or other provider to treat patients holistically. “If a patient would benefit from losing weight, if they have a tear in a ligament, if they have diabetes, we want to get to the root cause of their problem, then work hand-in-hand with their other providers who can help in those areas, so we’re not just managing their pain but taking steps to eliminate the problem causing it,” Dr. Racz said.
Treating the Patient, Not Just the Pain
“Pain doesn’t just affect someone physically but emotionally, financially, and in their interpersonal relationships,” said PTI Founding Physician Dr. Sameer Syed. “Our goal is to get them back to the life they love — using as few opioids as possible. But before we can do that, we need to be someone who will listen and take the time to build a relationship of mutual trust.”
Five-star online reviews attest to how well they’re doing just that. In one of those reviews, a patient named Carl related, “I have a herniated disc that is horribly painful. I couldn’t walk before seeing Dr Syed. He is a miracle worker. Almost instantly, I’ve gotten great results. I can walk and sleep again. He and his team made this as good of an experience as could be possible. They are all extremely friendly, caring, and knowledgeable. I am so thankful I was referred to them.”
