Stacy Rockwell is a Dallas girl through and through. Working ninety-to-nothing her entire adult life, she had no plans to slow down. Then, life sent her a delightful surprise. She met and married the man of her dreams. Suddenly, a job that had her away from home from sunup to sundown — and then some — didn’t seem so appealing. “My husband really wanted me to be a little more flexible for our life together,” Stacy said. “So, we started looking for a business with diversity that I could do in our new hometown.”

In 2019, they founded Shades by Thermal Guard, offering custom exterior motorized solar screens and custom interior wooden shutters for windows. “I studied interior design at North Texas State University (now The University of North Texas) and it’s something I really enjoy,” Stacy said. “In the DFW Metroplex, we love our custom homes, but many people don’t realize a custom home comes with custom windows and custom patios that often aren’t basic.”

No problem. Stacy loves sitting down with homeowners and helping them pick materials, colors, and designs to find the perfect solution for their home. “We handle everything from vision to installation,” she said. “Our adjustable motorized screens enclose and transform any outdoor space with the push of a button, making your patio, porch, balcony, or gazebo the ideal summer relaxation spot.

“Our wood shutters are made exclusively of solid basswood, hand-selected, and patiently kiln- dried to reduce the wood’s expansion and contraction due to weather,” Stacy added. “And one thing our customers love is that both products are meticulously manufactured right in Plano.”

Her customers also love supporting a local woman-owned business, not some nameless, faceless corporate outfit. “Our products come with a five-year manufacturer’s warranty and, if there’s ever a problem, I’m just a phone call away,” Stacy said. “We’re very proud of our products and craftsmanship and stand behind every install.”

One positive change the pandemic has brought is people rediscovering and enjoying their home spaces. “Our business is making sure those spaces are as comfortable, enjoyable, efficient, and beautiful as they can be.”

Meet Stacy

The daughter of a thoroughbred breeder, Stacy has been riding and jumping horses as long as she can remember. She and her beloved horse, Katy, jumped together for years. “Katy is 30 now, so it’s my time to pamper her in her later years,” Stacy said. For 15 years, she’s been donating her time to Equest Therapeutic Horsemanship, a nonprofit that provides equine-assisted activities and therapies for physically and mentally challenged individuals. Stacy recently moved her mom from East Texas to Watermere in Flower Mound and is enjoying lots of mother/daughter time. She also enjoys attending Village Creek Church.
