When Dr. Shehzad Batliwala, a board-certified ophthalmologist, was recognized by Living Magazine as a Top Doc, it felt less like a milestone and more like a reflection of how he’s always practiced medicine. Known to his patients as Dr. Shehz, he blends top-tier training with a calm, approachable presence, including advanced fellowship-level expertise that places him among just 3% of vision correction surgeons nationwide board certified by the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences. He takes time to listen, explain, and genuinely connect. It’s that balance of expertise and humanity that defines both his work and his practice, Visionary Eye.
Growing up in Tyler, Texas, his fascination with science and problem-solving set him on a path toward medicine. He attended the University of Texas at Tyler, graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. Medical school followed at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, where he was elected into the Sigma Sigma Phi
Honor Society.
Dr. Shehz’s professional trajectory continued to distinguish itself when he became the first osteopathic physician selected to complete an ophthalmology residency at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City — one of the nation’s most respected eye programs. “Ophthalmology is one of the few specialties where you can make an immediate, tangible difference,” he says. “In a short amount of time, you can completely change how someone experiences the world.”
That belief is at the heart of Visionary Eye, Dr. Shehz’s Plano-based practice built around a whole-person approach to care. The philosophy is simple: provide world-class surgical and refractive care while ensuring every patient feels seen, heard, and respected. “Helping people see clearly is important,” he says. “But helping them feel seen — that’s where trust is built.”
At Visionary Eye, advanced care is backed by innovation. The practice uses state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment tools, including NASA-trusted laser technology, to deliver precision, comfort, and efficiency. Designed as a one-stop solution, the practice reflects Dr. Shehz’s belief that medicine should feel thoughtful rather than transactional. “Vision correction isn’t one-size-fits-all,” he says. “What someone needs depends on how they live their life, and that starts with listening.”
That perspective was further shaped last year during a medical mission to Gaza, where Dr. Shehz provided eye care in an intensely resource-limited setting. While the experience was challenging, it reinforced his sense of responsibility as a physician. “It gave me perspective on medicine, resilience, and how fortunate we are,” he says. “It reminded me that our skills are a gift, and how we use them matters.”
With experience spanning NASA research, public health, humanitarian work, and top surgical institutions, Dr. Shehz brings a rare blend of scientific rigor and emotional intelligence to every case. Learn more about Dr. Shehz and take a vision correction quiz at Lasik-Plano.com.
