People often ask Dr. Karen Williamson when she decided to become a dentist. Amazingly, she can pinpoint the exact moment. “I was in 10th grade and we were given an assignment to write about a profession and interview someone in that field,” she said. “I decided to interview my orthodontist.” That assignment was the first step toward her becoming a family dentist who generations of Rockwall families have trusted.
Over the past three decades, Dr. Williamson’s enthusiasm for expanding her dental knowledge hasn’t diminished. From day one, she’s been an advocate for recognizing the connection between mouth health, gut health, brain health, and the overall health of the body. And she’s thrilled to see the rest of the industry getting onboard.
“There are 30,000 miles of arteries in our bodies, and mouth pathogens travel throughout all of them,” Dr. Williamson said. “Even with a robust immune system, it doesn’t take a lot of bad bacteria in your mouth to begin causing problems elsewhere in your body. Considering the sixth most common disease in the world is periodontal disease, we should all be concerned about what an unhealthy mouth can do to the rest of our bodies.”
Over the past three decades, Dr. Williamson has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education to stay abreast of advancements in her field and implemented the ones that can best serve her patients. “It’s important in dentistry to maintain an open mind and always consider new things coming along that can make the patient’s experience even better,” Dr. Williamson said. “Dentistry is advancing and improving every day, and my patients deserve the best and latest I can offer them.”
Toward that end, Dr. Williamson has invested in finding the unhealthy mouth bacteria using microscopes as well as saliva testing. Treating the mouth and making the body healthy at the same time is now targeted, not guesswork. Many of her patients have felt so much better, with less brain fog and more energy. The key is reducing the inflammation. Many patients are surprised to know that their orthopedic doctors want the mouth bacteria reduced prior to any surgeries for better outcomes and healing. Dr. Williamson loves collaborating with her colleagues to make that happen.
In addition to helping her patients become healthy, Dr. Williamson also likes to save them time while providing one of the best restorations for broken or decaying teeth: CEREC technology for same-day crowns. “CEREC (Computer-Aided Design/Computer- Aided Manufacturing) allows me to scan, image, design, mill, fire, and place the crown in about two hours and enable my patient to enjoy the rest of their day,” she said. She also offers advanced Smile Perfected whitening, a fast, gentle, and effective in-office tooth whitening system designed to brighten your smile in just 20 minutes. And she employs a Fotona laser for gentle, highly precise treatment with less pain, faster healing, and truly unmatched results.
Even as Dr. Williamson has advocated for many of these advancing technologies, she never wants to forget that no amount of technology can replace the experience and insight she’s gleaned over the past three decades and her true compassion for her patients.
