It can be easy not to think about your bones and joints when they’re operating well and you’re feeling great. But when they suddenly don’t, it’s time to call in the experts. How about “The Bones Docs” at Methodist Orthopaedic Surgical Associates. Drs. John Harris and Edward Mairura have helped thousands of your Tarrant County neighbors when they found their quality of life threatened by issues of the bones and joints.

Dr. John Harris likes to tell his patients, “I treat patients, not x-rays.” He and Dr. Mairura advocate a patient-forward philosophy in their practice. “Our approach is to give each patient our full attention at each visit and to treat them as a person, not just another surgery,” said Dr. Harris. “A patient is more than just a broken bone or case of arthritis that needs to be addressed. Our goal is to get patients and athletes (of all ages) back to their favorite activity or sport as soon and as safely as possible, to get them back at their very best.”

Dr. Edward Mairura counts the relationships he forges with his patients among his greatest blessings. He and Dr. Harris both bring a strong faith into their practice of medicine. “We hope our faith in Jesus Christ reflects in our work daily and positively affects everyone we treat,” Dr. Mairura said. “Our goal is to listen first, treat patients with love and respect the way we’d want our family members to be treated, and to offer surgery only as a last resort, after all non-surgical treatment options have been explored.”

These two family men are deeply involved in their community and their church and both enjoy bringing humor into their practice, connecting with patients and their staff and keeping the practice of medicine light and upbeat. They also believe strongly in sharing what God has given them by participating in medical mission trip to treat underserved populations in other countries.

Dr. Mairura specializes in general orthopaedic surgery with a special interest in trauma, total knee replacements, anterior hip replacements, arthroscopic treatment of the knee, carpal tunnel, and trigger fingers. He has specialized training in the anterior hip replacement approach, a minimally invasive technique that allows patients to have a muscle sparing surgery that leads to a faster recovery and less pain.

Dr. Harris enjoys performing shoulder and knee replacements, fractures “from top to bottom”, especially knee and shoulder arthroscopy, and treating injuries such as ACL and meniscus tears, rotator cuff injuries and shoulder dislocations. He is fellowship trained in sports and arthroscopy.

If there’s one message they’d like to get out it’s that you don’t just have to live with bone and joint pain. They’re here to help and are committed to doing everything they can to return each patient to the things they love to do and, whenever possible, do so without surgery.
