Far too many women are familiar with the emotional and physical toll of having breast cancer. Even if they aren’t already diagnosed but face a higher risk based on family history and other factors unique to them, the stress and unfamiliarity of their impending healthcare journey, anxiety about treatments, and the potential changes to their bodies and quality of life can leave them in a constant state of worry. But one thing they’ll never be is alone and without hope, especially if the compassionate team of breast patient nurse navigators at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center—Lake Pointe’s High-Risk Breast Screening Program has anything to say about it.

Women in North Texas who suddenly find themselves facing real concerns about any breast condition, including breast cancer, have plenty of options when it comes to prevention strategies, early detection, and diagnosis. Baylor Scott & White—Lake Pointe prides itself on being ahead of that curve by blending advanced breast screening and diagnostic services with coordinated education, health resources, doctor recommendations, and in-the-moment, hands-on care and emotional support.

Whether a woman just scheduled her mammogram or is further along in her journey and needs guidance on biopsies, breast cancer diagnosis, and next-step treatment options, the goal is always to offer a medical professional to walk with her.

“Being high-risk doesn’t mean breast cancer is inevitable, but it can occur at any age, and young women with certain risk factors may need to start screening earlier,” said Alejandra Waddle, a patient navigator at Baylor Scott & White Imaging Center—Rockwall. “That said, if a woman is high-risk, support services are essential to address her unique needs. Establishing a compassionate and understanding relationship as a nurse navigator can provide a safe space for women to express their fears and concerns.

“Having someone to talk to at each stage can make a significant difference.”

It’s Time for Your Mammogram

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women in the United States. While it mainly occurs in middle-aged and older women, a small number of women diagnosed with breast cancer are younger than 45. This makes early detection critical, and mammograms and other breast screenings play a considerable role. Baylor Scott & White—Lake Pointe offers up-to-date mammography at all five breast imaging facilities. This allows doctors to examine breast tissue with advanced imaging.

Once a patient comes in for a mammogram screening, Waddle is one of many professionals at the ready to contact those who meet the program’s criteria and may be considered high-risk, whether it’s because they have a strong family history or something else, such as genetic factors (BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene mutations), exposure to radiation, reproductive history, dense breast tissue, obesity, and other lifestyle factors. If they are high-risk, The High-Risk Breast Screening Program educates them about their risks, offers a personalized monitoring plan, and provides them with tools, resources, and support to feel more confident about the journey ahead.

Overall, the High-Risk Breast Screening Program exemplifies a proactive, patient-centered approach to healthcare and early detection. Some of the more effective strategies for early detection include implementing a more aggressive screening schedule with mammograms at an earlier age, genetic testing, chemoprevention, lifestyle changes, regular clinical exams, and more.

Through these efforts, the program stands as a model of excellence in the ongoing fight against breast cancer.

“We’ve had numerous women who, upon discovering their genetic predisposition, have been able to make informed decisions about their health,” Waddle said. “For instance, some have opted for more frequent screenings, while others have chosen preventative surgeries. These actions have not only potentially saved lives but also provided peace of mind. The knowledge gained from genetic testing has a ripple effect, benefiting entire families. Women who test positive for genetic mutations can then inform their relatives, who, in turn, may seek testing and take preventive measures themselves. Our educational efforts raise awareness about the importance of early detection and the role of genetics in breast cancer. These stories and outcomes are a testament to the profound impact of knowledge and early intervention. They underscore the importance of programs like ours in not only managing breast cancer risk but also in inspiring others to take charge of their health.”

Their Specialty Is You

The advantage of going to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center—Lake Pointe is having a breast health nurse navigator answer questions and provide valuable resources to help you make informed decisions.

Rather than work with a navigator by phone, patients have an advocate walking alongside them.

“Collaboration with a diverse array of medical experts is another program cornerstone,” Waddle said. “By engaging with breast specialists, geneticists, and radiologists on the medical staff at BSW Lake Pointe, the program benefits from a wealth of specialized knowledge and experience. These collaborations facilitate the development of comprehensive care strategies tailored to each patient’s unique needs, enhancing the overall quality of care provided. Beyond that, patient education is an ongoing priority. By empowering patients with up-to-date information, they are better equipped to make informed decisions about their health and engage in behaviors that reduce their risk of breast cancer.”

In an industry where everyone’s goal is to provide the highest level of care, it can be challenging to differentiate yourself. That’s why the Baylor Scott & White—Lake Pointe team goes to great lengths to provide patients and their families a quality experience regarding any breast cancer screening need.
