While Janelle Flatt and her team were going about the business of providing the finest in hair care and beauty for every day and the special days, they were delighted to hear that Living readers had voted them Best Hair Salon in 2024.

“We were super excited for that recognition,” Janelle says. “I love my work and give a lot of energy to making sure our clients enjoy our services. It’s great to know that others have noticed our efforts.”

Janelle and her team concentrate on making each guest feel welcomed, appreciated, and beautiful. They are dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, always seeking to improve their skills and learn new ones. Their mastery of services such as cut and style, color, hair extensions, treatments and makeup keeps them on the cutting edge of beauty and hair care.

Janelle herself has received training and certification in Master Color, The Wella Color Academy In New York Cutting and Styling, The Aquage and Vidal Sassoon Academy Smoothing and Permanent Straightening Systems Brazilian Keratin Treatments Micro-Link, Fusion, and Tape Ins, Weft Hair, and the newest v-light extensions Babe Hair Certified, Bellami, NBR (Natural Beaded Rows), and makeup certifications.

In order to offer even more, two barbers have recently joined the team. This allows the stylists to learn more about barber skills such as clean shaving and goatee trimming while the two barbers also add new skills to their repertoire.

With a combination of more than 100 years of experience, Janelle Alexis Salon offers all the services you could look for at a salon, but there’s nothing ordinary about their delivery. Hair offerings include everything from cut and style to color highlights, ombre, and corrective color. Five kinds of hair extensions are available. Hair treatments include Brazilian blowout, Keratherapy, Kera Rx, and more. They also provide hair and makeup for weddings at the salon or at the wedding venue.

In the hair coloring department, Janelle has become known as the “Blond Master.” It’s also no surprise that she excels with hair extensions. One of the stylists is an expert in Balayage, a technique involving free-hand painting highlights onto the hair, creating a soft and natural gradation of lightness towards the ends. Another holds expertise in hair and makeup.

This dedication to learning and growth applies not just to creating outer beauty for clients. It also applies to building relationships among the team and with their guests.

We’re Family

“We’re family,” Janelle says. “We feel so blessed to work in an industry where we can communicate with words and touch while creating outward beauty. Inwardly, we are connecting with each other and lifting each other up. There’s so much more to it than just cutting hair.”

Before she became a third-generation hairstylist, Janelle, as a child, accompanied her mother to her job teaching cosmetology school. By age 12, Janelle was already answering the phone and sweeping floors at her mom’s salon. She began working as the receptionist before age 18, learning customers’ voices, names, and numbers in order to quickly and efficiently provide just what they needed.

She later went to work at a salon in Houston, which employed 60 — half stylists and half barbers. In 2009, Janelle began traveling as an educator for hair extensions. She quickly moved up the ladder from a local educator to national and then to international.

She opened Janelle Alexis Salon eight years ago on October 13. Originally staffed with two stylists, the business has grown to a team of twelve. The space has undergone several remodels, in which Janelle has participated fully.

“I’m very handy and very hands-on,” Janelle says. “I even hung the gold light fixtures at each station.”

An Invigorating Atmosphere

Even while promoting education, learning, and stellar service, Janelle and her stylists create a family atmosphere at Janelle Alexis Salon. Their two emotional support dogs, Gizmo and Luna, welcome clients and share snuggles to make the experience relaxing as well as reinvigorating. More and more studies have shown the value of animals, especially dogs, in bringing comfort and improving mental health. Luna wears a dress to “work” every day and receives one new dress a month. Gizmo is famous for his “kisses.” Guests look forward to their visits.

Janelle has especially appreciated access to this family in the past year while she worked through some challenges in her personal life. The support of her team allowed her to travel to Costa Rica and Peru where she participated in spiritual practices intended to create self-awareness and peace.

These experiences have resulted in another creative venture for Janelle Alexis Salon. Janelle is currently working with an artist to create a jewelry line focused on authenticity and spiritual growth. The first piece will feature a spiral shape representing life’s journey.

While she has received much support from her team, Janelle also works to lift up other women-owned businesses through her social media. At @houstonhairbabe on Instagram you’ll find her promoting a network of small women’s boutiques, sharing her success with those around her.
