Dr. Dyer was born in Houston and raised in Beaumont, a small town in Southeast Texas with small-town values where everyone seemed to know one another. His father, a pediatric dentist, was well respected within the community and instilled a sense of pride within the young Dr. Dyer. His father was often recognized at sporting events or at an evening out with his family. “I always loved the way kids lit up, when they spotted him,” Dr. Dyer said. “I was proud to recognize what a respected member of our community he was and how loved he was by his patients.” It instilled a desire to learn more about what his father did and a hunger to become a part of the dental profession.

This took him to the steps of Texas A&M University, graduating in 1997 and then on to the University of Texas-Houston dental branch, graduating with honors in 2002. While in dental school, he discovered a passion for surgery, and with drive and determination, he applied to the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Serving under his director, Dr. Mark Thomas, a general dentist, periodontist and oral and maxillofacial fellow Dr. Dyer was cross trained in multiple dental fields. After three years of residency and serving as chief resident, Dr. Dyer graduated with a master’s in public health and his certificate in periodontology. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of gum disease. They also treat oral inflammation and the placement of dental implants. Being true to his Texas roots, he returned to Cypress in 2005 to start his practice.

Though his days don’t look exactly like his father’s did as a pediatric dentist, with much of his time spent in surgery, he still relishes the long-term relationships he’s been able to forge with his patients and the confidence they place in him by referring his services to their family and friends. He revels in another relationship, too. Working by his side every day is his wife, business partner, and best friend, Lacy. “It’s not an exaggeration to say I couldn’t do what I do without my wife,” Dr. Dyer said. “Statistically, husbands and wives working together have an increased chance of divorce, but for us, it’s been the opposite. Sharing this part of our life only brought us closer together. Outside of the physical act of dentistry, Lacy is the most important aspect of this practice.”

It’s Lacy who has nurtured the office climate, which patients praise as warm, welcoming, and family-friendly. “We pride ourselves in being service oriented,” Dr. Dyer said. “A dental office is often defined as a small business, and therefore the patients are our customers. They must be treated with kindness and respect. We know our patients have other options regarding their care, but because of the atmosphere Lacy has fostered, our patient base has continually grown and our patients continue to be loyal.”

Part of that patient-first philosophy is working hard and being open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM. “If we need to be here past 6 PM, that’s not a problem,” Dr. Dyer said. “We committed early on to never turn anyone away. While many dental offices close on Friday or one day throughout the week, we remain open to give our patients the best possible chance of being seen, being able to recuperate without missing work themselves, and being open to emergencies. The last thing we want as an office or simply as human beings is to see anyone suffer through dental pain when it can be prevented and/or treated.”

One of the most important things Dr. Dyer and the team strive to do each day is to empathize and listen to their patients. “It’s only by listening to them that we can develop a personalized treatment plan tailored specifically to their individual needs to provide the most effective solutions for their chief complaint and/or other problems related to the supporting structures around their teeth,” Dr. Dyer said. “Each of our patients is unique. Therefore, the treatment that is discussed and ultimately rendered must mirror that same uniqueness.”

Dr. Dyer endeavors to take the time to explain exactly what he’s doing and why. “We want patients to understand all their options and exactly what they can expect during their treatment,” he said. “Nothing relieves dental anxiety better than education — removing the unknown — and putting the patient in the driver’s seat of their own care.”

Much has changed since Dr. Dyer first opened his practice. Through continuing education far above that which is required of him, he has stayed abreast of the latest dental breakthroughs and even pioneered some of them. “One thing that has significantly changed my practice is cone beam computed tomography, or CBCT imagery, which allows one to see images in three dimensional spaces,” he said. “This technology uses a low energy dental X-ray source, exposing patients to less radiation. The scan takes as little as five seconds, and the entire procedure takes less than five minutes. It’s 10 times more accurate than other medical scanners and is the best way currently available to analyze teeth, roots, jaw joints, skeletal balance, and the entire structure surrounding the teeth.”

Outside of the office, Charles Dyer is a husband and father of three. With children in college, high school, and middle school, he and Lacy stay busy keeping up with all their activities. The two are also active with the nonprofit Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation, which provides life-improving advanced veterinary dental care to exotic animals located in captive animal facilities and animal sanctuaries in the U.S. and abroad. “Lacy is the managing director of the foundation. I’m past president and current director of public relations,” Dr. Dyer said.

“We’ve lived and worked in this community for 20 years and are grateful for and humbled by the support we’ve received,” Dr. Dyer said. “From the many general dentists who refer their patients to us, to the patients who trust us with their care and refer others to us and the amazing staff who care for our patients every day, we couldn’t be where we are without any of them.”

After 17 years in practice, the Dyers recently moved to a new office with increased workable space compared to their previous practice and is centrally located for their patient’s convenience. Find out more and schedule an appointment at CharlesDyerIV.com.
