Often, the scariest thing about surgery is fear of the unknown. “I see patients during what may be a vulnerable time in their lives,” said Board Certified General Surgeon Dr. Sarah Kim. “But there’s a lot I can do to put them at ease by providing guidance and reassurance, addressing their concerns, and giving them control of their health.”

That begins by really listening to her patient. “There’s so much the patient can tell me about their condition,” Dr. Kim said. “During their initial visit, we gather their medical history, review imaging, and conduct workups. The most important thing I can do is to truly hear what they have to say.”

Dr. Kim wants each patient to leave that first encounter prepared for what lies ahead. “I want to give them all the information they need about what to expect before, during, and after surgery,” she said. “I want them to feel ready and prepared for what lies ahead. We are partners in this and we’re going to get through this journey together.”

Dr. Kim also collaborates with other physicians. “When I work with a patient, I’m also working with their primary care provider and their healthcare team,” she said. “I strive to get everyone on the same page for the best interest of the patient and remain available to the patient’s providers throughout the process.”

For this and other reasons, area doctors enthusiastically recommend Dr. Kim to their patients needing surgery. In fact, most of her practice comes through referrals. Dr. Kim is credentialed at multiple hospitals and surgical centers in the North Texas area. To aid in her patients’ recovery and ultimate outcomes, she performs most of her surgeries robotically. “The robot allows me to be more precise,” she said. “Because I can perform even the most complex surgeries through small incisions, the patient experiences less bleeding, scarring, trauma to surrounding tissue, and less risk of infection with a much quicker recovery time.” In fact, many robotic surgeries can be done on an out-patient basis.

Meet Dr. Kim

A first-generation college graduate, Sarah Kim received a full scholarship to North Carolina State University, earned her medical degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master’s in public health degree at UNC’s acclaimed Gillings School of Global Public Health. She completed her general surgery residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, which included trauma, acute care surgery, and specialized training in robotic-assisted surgery. When not on the job, Dr. Kim enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with her husband, a local dentist, and their three-year-old golden doodle.
