Do you know the difference between an MD and a DO and which is right for you? In the US, physicians obtaining a medical degree can choose between becoming a Doctor of Medicine (MD) practicing allopathic medicine or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). While both DOs and MDs receive extensive medical training, pass examinations and boards, and are qualified to practice medicine, prescribe medication, and perform surgery, DOs must complete an additional 200 hours of medical training focusing on the musculoskeletal system, the body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles, and bones.
Holistic
For Board-Certified Family Practice Physician Dr. Quyen Trinh, the choice was obvious. After personally witnessing the ravages of cancer on those closest to him, he knew he would choose the path of an osteopathic physician. Now as managing physician of Mason Park Medical Clinic, he partners with patients, empowering them to live better and healthier lives. Every day, he sees the positive impact that a more holistic and comprehensive approach can have on his patients’ overall well-being. Rather than immediately prescribing medication, Dr. Trinh works hand-in-hand with his patients to identify underlying problems and develop a customized treatment plan unique to each patient.
Proactive
“While a traditional MD focuses on treating illnesses with medication or surgery to help alleviate symptoms, a DO takes a more comprehensive, holistic, patient-centered approach focusing on treating the whole patient and the root cause of their illnesses,” Dr. Trinh said. “DOs also devote a large portion of their care to prevention and patient education to avert chronic conditions from developing in the first place.”
Comprehensive
DOs understand that conditions in one area of the body can arise from other areas of the body, as well as from lifestyles or diet. “A patient who visits an MD for migraines, for instance, will likely undergo tests to determine what medical conditions are causing the migraines then receive medicine to treat the pain,” Dr. Trinh said. “When that same patient visits a DO for migraines, the DO will evaluate the entire body, the patient’s environment, diet, and overall lifestyle realizing that medical issues often result from other risk factors.”
Patient-Centered
While DOs believe in the power of medicine, testing, and other parts of traditional medicine, they also recognize that a patient’s experience and situation impact their physical and mental condition, which strongly affects overall health. “DOs practice a patient-focused approach to medical care striving to build strong doctor-patient relationships and develop a customized treatment plan for each patient,” Dr. Trinh said.
