Q&A
Interior Designer
What’s your design philosophy?
My philosophy in interior design is that I approach it as an art. There are so many elements — it’s about balance and flow and making your house function for you. Functionality is first and foremost. I want to create functional solutions and make them aesthetically pleasing. It’s important to me that clients feel like their house is their home. I also like to incorporate things that matter to the family. My objective is to learn about the client and tailor my designs according to what makes them feel joyful.
What are some of the hottest design trends now?
I follow trends because they’re interesting, but not every trend is for every project. I personally love pattern on pattern, curated and collected over time. European design influence is a big trend now. I’m glad people understand that this is a high-end, luxury look that’s still comfortable. Another trend is painted trims. Instead of a white trim, people might choose a color from their wallpaper and do blue or green trim. Wallpaper on the ceiling is another trend I like. It hits on the layering aspect in a room.
How much does it cost to work with an interior designer?
It all depends on the client’s goals. Some people just need some quick advice while others are looking for complete renovations. A mini-consult is great for people who need some professional guidance. We also offer day designs and a design concierge service. These flat-rate projects are fantastic for people who want to work with us but don’t quite hit all the qualifications for our full-service design package.
I’m selling my house soon. What should I do to make it more attractive?
Look at what you have and how you can improve upon it by spending as little money as possible. Don’t be afraid to infuse color into a space. I suggest blues because shades of blue can elevate a space more than white. A neutral blue can enhance your architecture and help you create dynamic moments. Another idea is painting the dining room black. When I did a day design for a client selling her house, her real estate agent wanted her to use white and neutralize everything. However, black really pulled everything together.
You mentioned using color, but I’m nervous. Shouldn’t I just use neutrals?
It brings me joy to help my clients navigate through their fear of using color. I’ve always gravitated toward colorful and eclectic design styles. Even going back to high school, I’d discover vibrant flea market finds or paint a jungle scene with zebras, florals, and colorful animals. Color has such a profound effect on the look and feel of a space.
