10 Fun Facts About Big Red Soda

Nearly everyone has tried Waco, Texas’ iconic contribution to the soft drink world — Dr. Pepper.
But did you know Big Red was also invented in Waco? As bold as the Lone Star State itself, this vintage American soda pop is a distinctive bright red color you can’t miss. Check out some fun facts about Big Red, then pop a top and enjoy discovering this fizzy, sweet-tasting beverage embedded in Texas’ culture.

  1. Big Red was created 75 years ago in 1937 by chemist Grover C. Thomsen and businessman R.H. Roark. The duo concocted the soda recipe in the chemical lab in Waco where Thomsen worked.
  2. Although invented in Texas, the soft drink was first available in Louisville, Kentucky, where R.H. Roark had a bottling plant.
  3. Originally called Sun Tang Red Cream Soda, the name was changed to Sun Tang Big Red Cream Soda in 1959. A decade later, the name was officially shortened after the president of the San Antonio bottling plant overheard golf caddies call it Big Red.
  4. Its distinctive flavor is described as sweet with a light blend of vanilla and citrus. Some claim it has
    a slightly spicy kick. Try some and decide for yourself.
  5. Big Red was the sixth best-selling soda in the U.S. in the 70s and remains popular throughout Texas
  6. San Antonio is home to the Barbacoa & Big Red Festival. This year it will take place October 7th
    and 8th at the R&J Music Pavilion.
  7. In 2008, Dr. Pepper purchased a minority interest in Big Red, Inc. Almost 80% of Big Red is distributed by Dr. Pepper today.
  8. Although the soda’s production facility is in Waco, the company’s headquarters moved to Austin in 2009.
  9. Tipping its hat to what once was a soda pop rival, the Dr. Pepper museum in Waco includes a Big Red exhibit.
  10. The brand now includes Big Red, Big Blue, and Big Peach, which all contain caffeine. If you prefer a caffeine-free soft drink with a fruity taste, try the company’s fourth flavor, Big Pineapple.
