It’s no secret — healthcare needs a makeover. People are sick. Chronic disease is claiming the lives of younger and younger segments of the population. Aging has become unbearable for many. Is there a solution?
What’s Making Everyone So Sick And Tired?
To be succinct, at the very heart of many chronic conditions and diminished vitality is one common issue: hormone imbalance. Hormones play a fundamental role in long-term health, risk of chronic disease, as well as emotional and mental well-being. But for nearly two decades “hormones” has been a dirty word.
In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) — the largest study at the time to examine the safety and effectiveness of hormone therapy on women’s health — was abruptly halted when subjects on hormone therapy were shown to be at an increased risk of breast cancer, heart attack, and stroke.
However, when the dust settled on the media sensationalism and the WHI was analyzed and reviewed by leading researchers and scientists from various sectors of medicine, the study was found to be greatly flawed and unfairly categorized all forms of hormone therapy as the same.
This revelation was greeted with less interest from the media and so the long, slow uphill climb of unraveling the myths and misconceptions of hormones began. In the meantime, millions of women (and men) suffered with a lower quality of life, increased risk of disease, and even early death.
Finding a Fresh Perspective
Among the practitioners unfurling the data and research on hormones in the early 2000s was Terri DeNeui, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC. Her career began as an emergency room nurse, watching men and women come in and out of the ER suffering from highly preventable conditions and leave only to cling to a barely sustainable existence.
“I can remember one three-day stint of night shifts in the ER and thinking, ‘the vast majority of patients I’ve seen over the past three days all have preventable chronic diseases that are causing their admission to the hospital. Why aren’t we — the healthcare professionals — doing more to prevent disease in the first place?’”
This thought was the spark that ignited what has rapidly become not only a mission for Dr. DeNeui, but a mission for the thousands of practitioners who have studied under Dr. DeNeui.
In 2008, Dr. DeNeui opened her own private practice to help men and women suffering unnecessarily with symptoms and conditions that were the result of hormone imbalance. Her goal at the time was to rally against the reactive medicine and sick care philosophy perpetuated by a healthcare system that was making people sick, keeping them sick, and draining their existence. She was determined to make a difference one patient at a time.
This experience helped turn a spark into a flame. Dr. DeNeui met her husband-turned-business partner, Dan DeNeui, who is the current CEO of EVEXIAS Health Solutions, the organization the two formed in 2018 to further the mission. Together, this power couple set a course to tackle the shortcomings of the healthcare system, knowing full well that this mission could not be accomplished just one patient at a time.
Dr. DeNeui and her team had to help healthcare professionals and their patients recognize that it is not a “normal,” part of aging to feel sick, tired all the time, anxious, moody, depressed, or suffer from hot flashes, sleeplessness, or low libido. Hormones are vital chemical messengers responsible for nearly every function in the body. Sub-optimal hormones put men and women of all ages at increased risk for disease. With this in mind, Dr. DeNeui and her team began to train practitioners on the benefits of hormone optimization and the best approaches to hormone health, including hormone therapy, nutraceuticals, and integrative therapies, now termed the EvexiPel® Method.
Pellet therapy is the cornerstone of her teachings because compared to creams, pills, patches, and injections, it offers patients near-natural results and greater convenience. The therapy dates back to the 1930s, but for all its benefits, pellet therapy had its flaws. Patients have reported the procedure as painful or been left with unsightly incisions. Some patients have dealt with extrusions (pellets coming out) or the buildup of scar tissue which can render the therapy altogether ineffective.
A Transformative Legacy
In 2018, Dr. DeNeui released a new pellet formulation in partnership with leading outsourcing facility, FarmaKeio Outsourcing, that overcame the most common issues with pellet therapy. This pellet formulation was awarded a U.S. patent for its uniqueness, and it has rapidly become preferred by HRT pellet providers across the country.
One OBGYN out of Houston, Johnny J. Peet, MD, who has prescribed and administered pellets for nearly a decade, describes the new formulation as a game changer, stating, “In the 90-year history of pellet therapy, no one else has done this. These pellets and the insertion technique developed by Dr. DeNeui make the whole experience better for practitioners and their patients.”
This year is turning out to be a landmark year for Dr. DeNeui. In the fall, she will release her first book, Hormone Havoc — another channel to fan the flames and further the mission of transforming healthcare. In her book, she shares anecdotes and practical advice, while also speaking candidly about the sordid past of hormone therapy. In her discussion, she talks about the vast misinformation and arms patients and practitioners with baseline knowledge that will help them distinguish fact from fiction.
“I wrote Hormone Havoc for everyone who has been plagued with health issues, sought answers from multiple places and professionals, only to be told, ‘Nothing is wrong. You’re normal.’
Dr. DeNeui and Dan DeNeui now manage an organization that is comprised of multiple entities and thousands of people driving toward real, impactful change. The idea began as a single ember of desire to positively help people and is quickly evolving into a legacy that will forever change not only how people care for their health but how they live as they age.
