When patients are facing surgery, expertise matters. But so do trust, communication, and knowing the person behind the white coat genuinely cares about the outcome.
That philosophy has long been at the heart of Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas, led by bariatric surgeon Dr. Folahan Ayoola. Now, with general surgeon Dr. Shinyeong Jeong and the launch of Premier Surgical of North Texas, patients throughout the region have access to an even broader range of surgical care from physicians committed to treating the person, not simply the diagnosis.
Together, the two practices represent a growing vision for surgical care in North Texas: combining advanced surgical techniques with compassion, accessibility, and the kind of personal relationships that can sometimes get lost in modern medicine.
Changing the Conversation About Obesity
For Dr. Ayoola, helping people overcome obesity often begins long before entering the operating room. It starts by changing the conversation.
Obesity is a complex, chronic disease influenced by genetics, hormones, metabolism, environment, behavior, and numerous other factors. Yet many people struggling with their weight have spent years believing their inability to lose weight and keep it off represents a personal failure.
At Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas, the message is different: No blame. No shame. Just compassionate care that gets results.
It is more than a tagline. It reflects the philosophy Dr. Ayoola has built his practice around.
“One of the most important things we can do is help patients understand that obesity is not a character flaw,” Dr. Ayoola says. “These are people who have often spent years trying to lose weight and blaming themselves when it comes back. Our job is to remove that blame, understand the disease, and help them find a solution that gives them a real opportunity for lasting success.”
A board certified general surgeon with fellowship training in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Ayoola has dedicated much of his career to helping patients achieve significant, sustainable weight loss and improve their overall health.
Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas offers advanced bariatric procedures including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, duodenal switch, SADI and revisional bariatric surgery, along with medical weight-management options for patients who may not need or be ready for surgery. The emphasis is on finding the right treatment for the individual.
More Than Weight Loss
For patients living with severe obesity, meaningful weight loss can affect virtually every area of life. Conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and other obesity-related diseases can improve significantly following successful bariatric treatment.
But some of the victories Dr. Ayoola values most aren’t found on a lab report or bathroom scale. They are found in everyday life.
Patients talk about being able to play with their children or grandchildren again. They travel without worrying about fitting comfortably in a seat. They return to activities they once loved. Some accomplish things they had quietly stopped believing were possible.
“The number on the scale matters, but it’s not what excites me most,” Dr. Ayoola says. “It’s hearing that a patient can get down on the floor and play with their grandchildren again, that they’re traveling, that they’re off medications, or that they’re doing something they haven’t been able to do in years. That’s when you realize what this journey can truly give someone back.”
It is also why Dr. Ayoola pushes back against the notion that bariatric surgery is the “easy way out.”
Surgery is a powerful medical tool, but long-term success still requires commitment. Patients must learn new eating habits, prioritize nutrition, become more active and continue working on the emotional and behavioral aspects of their relationship with food.
The mental journey, Dr. Ayoola believes, can be every bit as important as the physical one.
Experience Meets Innovation
Dr. Ayoola’s approach combines extensive surgical experience with modern minimally invasive and robotic-assisted techniques. In addition to performing bariatric surgery, he has helped train other physicians in robotic-assisted surgery and serves as Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound.
Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas serves patients through locations in Denton and Frisco, drawing people from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area and beyond.
Technology and experience are important, but patients often remember something else about their care: being heard.
Taking the time to understand someone’s history, frustrations, fears and goals is an essential part of determining the right treatment. It is also a philosophy that carries naturally into the newest chapter of the group’s story.
Introducing Premier Surgical of North Texas
While Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas focuses on obesity and metabolic care, Premier Surgical of North Texas extends that patient-first approach to individuals needing general surgical care.
At the forefront of that expansion is Dr. Shinyeong Jeong, a general surgeon trained in both traditional and robotic-assisted surgical techniques.
Dr. Jeong treats a broad range of surgical conditions, including gallbladder disease, hernias, appendicitis, gastrointestinal conditions, breast conditions, abscesses, and skin and soft-tissue masses. Her surgical capabilities also include more complex abdominal procedures, such as bowel surgery and complex ventral hernia repair.
For patients, however, the technical side of surgery is only part of the experience. “Surgery can be intimidating, especially when someone is dealing with a new diagnosis or experiencing pain and doesn’t know what comes next,” Dr. Jeong says. “I want my patients to understand what is happening, what their options are, and why I’m recommending a particular treatment. When patients feel informed and heard, they can approach surgery with much more confidence.”
That communication is particularly important in general surgery, where patients may arrive frightened, uncomfortable or unsure whether surgery is even necessary.
Dr. Jeong’s philosophy is to first understand the problem, then help the patient understand the options.
Two Practices. One Philosophy.
Although Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas and Premier Surgical of North Texas serve patients with different needs, they are connected by a simple philosophy:
Listen first. Educate patients. Recommend the treatment that makes sense for the individual. And treat every patient as a person rather than a procedure.
Having the two specialties working alongside one another also creates a valuable continuum of care.
A patient seeking treatment for obesity may have a hernia, gallbladder problem or another general surgical condition. Likewise, someone seeking general surgical care may also be struggling with obesity or obesity-related health conditions and benefit from the specialized resources available through Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas.
Rather than viewing each condition in isolation, the practices have the ability to look at the bigger picture.
For Dr. Jeong, that also means becoming part of the community she serves.
“What attracted me to Premier Surgical of North Texas was the opportunity to build relationships with patients and become part of the community,” she says. “I want patients to know they have access to modern surgical care close to home, but also a surgeon who will take the time to listen to them and be there throughout the process.”
Care That Goes Beyond the Operating Room
For both Dr. Ayoola and Dr. Jeong, successful surgery begins well before an operation.
It starts with listening, education and helping patients understand what to expect. And it continues through recovery, follow-up and the relationship that develops between a patient and the healthcare team.
For bariatric patients, that relationship can span years as they navigate nutrition, exercise, changing health needs and long-term weight maintenance.
For general surgery patients, it means having a surgeon who can guide them from diagnosis through treatment and recovery with clarity and confidence.
Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas continues its mission of helping people overcome obesity without blame or shame.
Premier Surgical of North Texas expands that commitment to patients seeking comprehensive general surgical care.
Together, Dr. Folahan Ayoola and Dr. Shinyeong Jeong are creating something larger than two surgical practices.
They are building a place where advanced medicine, personal relationships and compassionate care come together, right here in North Texas.
