The Woodlands Sports Medicine Centre is no stranger to being the preferred orthopedic and sports medicine practice in Montgomery County. After all, its rich history as The Woodlands’ first orthopedic group dates back 37 years — making it almost as old as the vibrant community it serves. Over the decades, this longevity has allowed its team of compassionate and skilled providers to care for multiple generations within the same families, treating everyone from infants to parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

As the area has grown, so has The Woodlands Sports Medicine Centre, which has become the go-to comprehensive practice for knee, hip, shoulder, back, and neck pain, sports injuries, spine conditions, complex reconstructive surgery, and everything in between. Yet, it has remained independently owned and committed to the same patient-centric standards it has upheld since Day 1.

“It is rare for a group as large as ours to still exist in its original state after 37 years,” Dr. Joyce Kim said. She is dual board certified in pain management and anesthesiology and is one of 10 providers at The Woodlands Sports Medicine Centre. “Every physician dreams of joining a group that’s strong and full of cooperative physicians who work well together and enjoy caring for patients.”

She added, “If you slip and fall, suffer a sports injury, or are in a motorcycle accident, more often than not, you will be seen by one of our local community doctors. Every patient gets the red-carpet treatment when they come here. They are treated like family.”

Meet Your Community Doctors

When the late Dr. Carl Cannon founded The Woodlands Sports Medicine Centre in 1988, he envisioned a thriving independent orthopedic practice that would serve the community’s orthopedic and sports medicine needs for generations. At the time, The Woodlands had only been incorporated for 14 years and boasted a population of roughly 20,000 residents. Fast-forward to today, and the community has surpassed 120,000 residents. Meanwhile, The Woodlands Sports Medicine Centre has grown from just two providers to 10 and recently added a second location in Conroe.

Renowned surgeon Dr. Brian Chimenti joined as the third provider in 1999 and is now the group’s president. Born and raised in Houston, he completed his doctorate at Baylor College of Medicine and his residency at the University of Colorado in Denver. He has experience in all aspects of orthopedics, having served multiple years as co-chair and chief of orthopedic surgery at the Joint Center for Memorial Hermann Hospital of The Woodlands. He specializes in arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery.

Joining him are Dr. Koijan Kainth, Dr. Joyce Kim, Dr. Jason Piefer, Dr. Rabah Qadir, Dr. Munir Shah, Dr. Meena Shatby, Dr. Kevin Smith, Dr. David Strausser, Dr. Emily Sudek, and a growing team of physician assistants and support staff.

Together, The Woodland Sports Medicine Centre providers offer a suite of technologically advanced treatments and compassionate rehabilitation plans that are as comprehensive as it gets and tailored to each patient’s unique needs. In 2001, Dr. Strausser implemented the practice’s premier spine surgery program to tackle conditions ranging from herniated discs and spinal stenosis to fractures, bone spurs, and spinal tumors. In 2015, Dr. Kim started their interventional pain management program to help relieve back pain, neck pain, joint pain, headaches, abdominal and pelvic pain, and cancer-related pain. Using a holistic approach, she emphasizes functionality and quality of life for patients suffering from chronic pain.

Not to be outdone, Dr. Qadir is a renowned trauma surgeon who provides emergency trauma care to severely injured patients. He is interested in direct anterior hip replacement surgery, computer navigation, and robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacement. He uses minimally invasive, muscle-sparing approaches to optimize patient outcomes and minimize recovery times.

“People in our community know that when they need orthopedic and sports medicine care, they can come to us,” Dr. Kim added. “Many practices will lose that personal touch over time, but not us. And you can see it in our staff — they are incredibly dedicated to our patients. They genuinely want to know how they can help and if there are ways to quickly get someone in front of a provider.

“Patients want to meet the staff person who helped them in an emergency. It’s very common to hear, ‘Where is Teresa? I want to hug her and say thank you.’ It’s a real challenge to duplicate moments like that anywhere else.”

Around-the-Clock Care

The Woodlands Sports Medicine Centre is available to patients 24/7, including emergencies. The staff prides itself on being a valuable resource for the community.

“Being here for as long as we have means that we have very strong relationships with other physicians in different specialties,” Dr. Kim said. “We know cardiologists, general surgeons, and others who can offer expert care in other disciplines beyond our scope. That means something to us. We want to be that resource.”
