As a board certified general surgeon with a broad range of experience, including acute care surgery and minimally invasive robotic surgery, Dr. Kim is there when patients need her.

Setting the Standard for Surgical Care

Not only was Dr. Kim the first person in her family to become a physician, but she was also a first-generation college graduate and a Park Scholar (a full scholarship program at North Carolina State University). She earned her medical degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master’s in public health degree at UNC’s acclaimed Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Kim then went on to complete her general surgery residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, which included trauma, acute care surgery, and specialized training in robotic-assisted surgery.

“As a general surgeon, I perform a variety of surgeries,” said Dr. Kim, “such as gallbladders, appendixes, hernias, including complex abdominal wall reconstruction for recurrent or larger hernias, to mass removals, and more. Many of my elective and emergency cases are performed minimally invasive via robotic-assisted laparoscopy.”

The advantage of robotically performed surgery includes smaller incisions, which also means less pain, shorter or no overnight hospital stays, and easier recovery time.

“For hernias of all sizes, for example,” explained Dr. Kim, “through robotics, only three small incisions are required, so the recovery is a lot easier than prior where a large incision would increase risk of infection and patient would endure longer postoperative pain and recovery.”

“When patients trust me to perform surgery on them, I don’t take the responsibility lightly,” she said. “I help them understand their diagnosis and the process to recovery.
