Some people hesitate to talk about urologic issues, like urinary leakage, trouble managing their bowels, or pain or pressure in the pelvic area. They may not know how to articulate their symptoms, they might feel embarrassed bringing it up with their doctor, or they might attribute their issues to a normal part of aging.
Here’s the thing, though — you don’t have to feel uncomfortable and you shouldn’t chalk up every discomfort to aging. Dr. Jessie Chen, a board-certified urologist who’s fellowship-trained in urology, wants to normalize talking about any issues you may be experiencing. “There’s no shame in talking about these issues — we talk about them all day,” she says. “I encourage people to see a urologist if they have an issue that’s bothersome.”
Dr. Chen sees patients for all kinds of reasons, including overactive bladder, kidney stones, and pelvic floor disorders. She says that while you don’t necessarily need to book an annual check-up with a urologist, you should definitely be evaluated if you’re experiencing urinary issues. “I find it incredibly rewarding to not only help my patients feel better,” she says, “but to educate them about their conditions.”
Dr. Chen’s subspecialty in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery means she often sees women dealing with issues like vaginal prolapse, urinary incontinence, and frequent UTIs. “I see many women who encounter these issues as they age. It can be incredibly challenging for them,” she says. “If you’re having urinary leakage or frequent UTIs — more than three times a year — it’s a good idea to seek help. It’s not something you should have to live with.”

Dr. Chen’s specialized training and genuine interest in her patients’ well-being make her an excellent choice if you or a loved one needs urologic care. “Having someone with a specific focus in reconstructive surgery and incontinence can be very beneficial, especially for patients with complex histories,” she says.
